Rachel Hislop '11 Named Huffington Post's Fashion Editor to Watch

The Huffington Post gave a shout-out to 16 black fashion editors during February’s Fashion Week in New York City, and Rachel Hislop ’11 was among them.

The popular blog and online news source posted “16 Black Fashion and Beauty Editors You Should be Following During New York Fashion Week,” ranking Hislop, a style editor with GlobalGrind.com, along with editors from Allure, Ebony, Glamour and Essence magazines and websites, among others.

Although she felt pressured having to live up to the Huffington Post announcement Feb.9, Fashion Week was magical, Hislop said.

“My favorite part of the event was seeing my name on the chair next to big-time reporters. I simply can’t believe it.”

Hislop’s big break came from Dr. Dre, famous record producer, rapper and entrepreneur. Hislop was assigned to cover an event and asked the rapper if she could interview him. Dr. Dre gave Hislop one of the biggest stories of her career.

“I had no idea it was Dr. Dre’s first interview in three years. The next day it exploded on the Internet.”

Road to the Runway

Hislop’s road to the runway began with SUNY Plattsburgh’s magazine journalism program. She was a leader of AKEBA, the black student union, and on Cardinal Points, the student-run newspaper, where she gained management skills.

“I have always loved having a platform where I can express myself and inform people about what I think is cool,” she said.

After graduation, Hislop strategically used social media to network and create her personal brand. She landed an internship with GlobalGrind.com through a personal connection.

“I went above and beyond as an intern,” said Hislop. “I would arrive early and leave late.”

Passion for Fashion

Hislop has always had an interest in fashion and is a self-described “girly girl.” As a style editor, she highlights key pieces everyone should have in their closet.

“A well-fitted blazer and a black dress are perfect for young professionals,” she said. “A leather motorcycle jacket is a must-have this spring. You can throw it over anything to add some edge.”

Hislop will continue to divulge spring’s style secrets while she is developing her own look.

“My ultimate goal is to get more sleep, drink more water and wear my cobalt blue cape.”
