Hank Nuwer to Present Talk About Hazing

LATTSBURGH, NY __ Greek Affairs at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh will present a program by Hank Nuwer, "Hazing: When Rites Become Wrongs," on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center.

Nuwer's powerful program includes stories about young people killed in hazing incidents. His talk will encourage students to guard against risk-taking rites such as hazing. He will also discuss how welcoming initiations can provide a satisfactory substitute for hazing-type initiations.

Nuwer published his first article on hazing in Human Behavior magazine in 1978. Since then, his byline has appeared on hazing articles in publications such as American Legion magazine, Chronicle of Higher Education, New York Times and Harpers Magazine.

He has written three books on hazing: Broken Pledges; Wrongs of Passage; and High School Hazing. He was a consultant on an NBC-TV movie, "Moment of Truth: Broken Pledges," starring baseball star Barry Bonds and Linda Gray.

Nuwer also appeared in the Mountain Lake PBS documentary, "Unless a Death Occurs: Hazing Examined."

Expelled from high school and unruly as a young adult, Nuwer works in his spare time with gang members who display writing talent.

He was named 1999 outstanding alumnus at Buffalo State College. His books have won him listings in Marquis' Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in America.
