Gospel Choir to Present 'Soulful Christmas 2015' Sunday, Dec. 6
The rousing get-up-on-your-feet-and-clap harmonics of the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir will fill the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium once again when the ensemble presents its annual Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 6 beginning at 4 p.m.
“A Soulful Christmas Celebration 2015” marks the 11th year the choir has performed its blend of traditional gospel, urban gospel, contemporary Christian, European, Caribbean and Afrocentric music for the holiday season. Often performing before standing-room-only audiences, the 65-voice chorus and eight-piece band will offer works by Donald Lawrence, Brenda Moore, Whitney Houston, and a Norman Hutchin arrangement of “Emmanuel,” among other selections.
Special guests this year include the Champlain Valley Irish Dancers led by Marie Short, the Cumberland Bay Barbershop Chorus, directed by Dianne Brooks, and the Plattsburgh High School Jazz Ensemble, which will perform a pre-show at 3:30 under the direction of Patrick Towey.
The Gospel Choir, under the artistic leadership, Dr. Dexter Criss, professor of chemistry at SUNY Plattsburgh, has traveled internationally to Japan, Toronto, Montreal, and recently to St. Martin/Maarten. SUNY Plattsburgh alumna Andrea Ogle serves as choir director and choreographer. Sophomore Kesean Joseph of Brooklyn serves as the choir’s student director; Zuwena James, a sophomore from Trinidad, serves as Praise Team Ensemble leader; Adrienne Charles, senior from Staten Island, is Praise Dance leader; and Jeff Wheel of Advance Music in Burlington is band leader.
The choir will celebrate its 25th anniversary in the spring at Gospel Choir Weekend 2016. Choir alumni will return to campus April 29 through May 1.
Tickets to “A Soulful Christmas Celebration 2015” are $5 for students and $12 for adults in advance; $8 for students and $15 for adults at the door. Children under 5 free but must share their seat with an adult. Tickets are available at the Angell College Center desk, the Christian Supply Center, 164 Prospect Ave., Plattsburgh, and the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir Office, Room 133, Hawkins Hall.
