Gospel Choir to Perform 'Common Roots' Concert Feb. 25
The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music and the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir are presenting the Common Roots 2018 concert Feb. 25 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Newman Center, 92 Broad St.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, is in honor of Black History Month. It will present historical music such as spirituals, inspirational ballads, calypso and folk music.
There will be performances by the SUNY Plattsburgh Praise Dancers, Steppers and the African Unity Dancers. The all women’s quartet group, Voices of Faith, will also be featured at the concert.
“Long before gospel music, pop music, country, rock ‘n’ roll or even jazz, the spirituals were sang in every cotton field, sugar field and plantation mansion throughout the deep South and the Caribbean,” said Dr. Dexter Criss, choir director. “Those spirituals instilled hope and purpose to generations of slaves and former slaves alike.”
Refreshments will be served after the concert.
