Gospel Choir Returns for Annual 'Soulful Christmas' Concert

The Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir will present its holiday season concert, “A Soulful Christmas 2014” Sunday, Dec. 7 beginning at 4 p.m. in E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall.

The choir’s sound combines traditional gospel, urban gospel, contemporary Christian music with Caribbean and Afrocentric rhythms and spiritual overtones. Works include “The Gift,” by Donald Lawrence, the traditional gospel Christmas selection, “Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child,” an African arrangement called “Sing Noel,” a Jamaican holiday selection called “Halle Halle Halle” and more.

Special guests this year will be the Plattsburgh High School Select Vocal Ensemble. Directed by William Verity, the ensemble, as its name suggests, is a select group of students from the school’s larger chorus. In addition to its own musical selections, the ensemble will join the Gospel Choir for an arrangement of Pharrell Williams’ hit, “Happy.”

Also performing will be the Praise Team, the Praise Dance Team and the Step Team. The SUNY Plattsburgh Gospel Choir’s nine-piece band, headed by Jeff Wheel, will accompany the performances.

Directed by 2009 education graduate Andrea Ogle and under the artistic leadership of SUNY Plattsburgh chemistry professor, Dr. Dexter Chris, the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir has performed internationally in Japan, Toronto, Montreal, and St. Martin/Marrten. John Thomas, a music major from Trinidad, serves as student director.

Advance tickets are $14 for general admission, $5 for students, and $17 general admission and $8 for students day of show and are available at the Angell College Center desk, Christian Supply Center, 164 Prospect Ave., Plattsburgh, Advance Music Center, 75 Maple St., Burlington, the Strand Center for the Arts, 23 Brinkerhoff St., Plattsburgh, and the Gospel Choir office, 133 Hawkins Hall.
