Flag Marks Milestone in Construction of New Building
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2009) -- Last week, construction workers raised an American flag atop SUNY Plattsburgh's new Hudson Hall addition, now under construction. The erection of the flag marks a milestone in the construction process -- the laying of the last piece of steel in the building's framework.
This "topping out" of a structure is a tradition for steel workers. Similar observances have been practiced by societies throughout the ages by ancient Egyptians, Renaissance Europeans and Native Americans to name a few.
