Film Forum to Bring Human Rights' Abuses to the Fore

PLATTSBURGH, NY (September 4, 2007) - The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Foreign Language and Literature will host a film symposium, "The Abuse of Human Rights," Wednesdays throughout the fall semester from 7 to 10 p.m. beginning Sept. 12 and every other Wednesday through Dec. 5 in Room 200 of Yokum Hall on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus.

Participants will view films such as "Machuca" and "The Last Stand of Salvador Allende," accounts of the 1973 bloody overthrow of democratically elected President Salvador Allende by the CIA-backed Gen. Augusto Pinochet; "Strawberry and Chocolate," a story of Cuban politics, sexuality, literature and friendship; and "Romero," the story of Oscar Romero, archbishop of San Salvador and denouncer of human-rights violations during El Salvador's Civil War in the 1970s. Discussion will follow the screenings.

The symposium is free and open to the public.
