'Fashion' on Hartman Theatre Stage April 21-24
The SUNY Plattsburgh Theater Department will present Anna Cora Mowatt’s play, “Fashion,” Thursday, April 21-Sunday, 24 in the Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts Building.
The 1845 play is a satire and comedy of manners that targets America’s obsession with European highbrow taste and cultural distinction. “Fashion” was a big hit for the actress-turned-playwright and according to Samuel French, the play publishing house, has since been cited as the best American comedy of the 19th century.
Directed by Dr. Shawna Kelty, associate professor of theater, it is noted that the play, written nearly 200 years ago, sheds light on issues of class, racism, sexism and privilege and as such, contains potentially offensive and extreme language at times. Viewer discretion is advised.
Tickets, available at the Angell College Center desk, are $3 SUNY Plattsburgh students, $9 faculty, staff, staff and non-SUNY Plattsburgh students, and $11 for the general public. Thursday discount tickets are $1 for SUNY Plattsburgh students and $5 all others. For more information, call 518-564-2180.
