Emeritus History Professor to Discuss Plattsburgh’s Historic East End

Historic preservation expert and SUNY Plattsburgh history professor emeritus, Dr. James Lindgren, will discuss the city’s historic East End at Plattsburgh Public Library’s monthly speaker series, Lifelong Learning for All, Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the library auditorium on the second floor.

During his 37-year career, Lindgren taught courses in historic preservation, history museums, and historic sites. The recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship, Lindgren will dive into the development of “Plattsburgh’s Point,” discussing the area’s architecture and the many styles of buildings that contribute to the city’s extended historic district, which includes Macomb, Hamilton, Peru and Bridge streets.

The longtime professor joined the history faculty as an assistant professor in September 1984, moving through the ranks to associate in 1990 and then full professor four years later. He retired Sept. 1, 2021.

His library talk will address the significance of the structures, owned by Plattsburgh’s wealthy mercantile families, local dignitaries and merchants, and the buildings’ role in Plattsburgh’s history and the ongoing efforts to preserve this important part of the community’s built heritage. The historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Lifelong Learning for All series, held the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., brings local experts to the library to share their knowledge with the community. Open to the public, each session includes a half-hour presentation followed by a Q&A.
