Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Commemoration Jan. 19


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Community Commemoration will be held Monday, Jan 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the John XXIII Newman Center, 90 Broad Street. The annual event is cooperatively sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, John XXIII College Community Newman Center, The Mayor's Office of the City of Plattsburgh and Sodexho Campus Services at Plattsburgh State.

The community celebration will feature special guest speaker Ken Wibecan, who retired as senior editor for Modern Maturity magazine and moved to the North Country. Prior to working at Modern Maturity , Wibecan was a weekly op-ed columnist for the Long Beach Press Telegram in California. He is a former vice-president of the Black Journalists Association of Southern California and a long-time member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
  
The program will also feature musical selections from various local musicians including the Dr. Martin Luther King Day Community Singers.

Also honored at the ceremony will be three local high school graduates who received the 2003 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission Scholarship. These graduates include: Ayisha Blanks, a Plattsburgh High School graduate now attending SUNY Albany; Sue-Ann Dunn, a Plattsburgh High School graduate attending SUNY Geneseo; and Natashia Foster, a Saranac High School graduate attending College of Saint Rose in Albany.

The commemoration is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided following the ceremony. Donations will be accepted during the commemoration and will be applied to the MLK Scholarship Fund.
