CVOS, Choral Union Present "By George! Gershwin" March 31


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Music Department at the State University of New York College and the Champlain Valley Oratorio Society (CVOS) will present "By George! Gershwin" on Saturday, March 31, at 8 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall,

Under the musical direction of Jo Ellen Miano, associate professor of music, the spring concert will feature favorites from the Gershwin songbook, including a dozen of George and Ira Gershwin's timeless songs from the 1920s and '30s.

The chorus will be accompanied by Dr. Karen Becker, assistant professor of music, on piano along with faculty member Ellen Powel on electric bass and Austin Hodges, a SUNY Plattsburgh sophomore from Hampden, Maine, on drums.

The evening's lineup includes such hits as "I Got Rhythm,"  "An American in Paris," "Embraceable You," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," and the U.S. premiere of a new arrangement of "Slap That Bass" by London arranger Paul Ayres. Vocal solos by chorus members feature sopranos Kathy Aprill and Julie Frisbie, baritone Tony Galloro and tenor Jim Waldermann in "Porgy and Bess," soprano Krista Johnson in "Someone to Watch Over Me" and soprano Michaela Bushey in "'S Wonderful."

Tickets are available from CVOS members, the Corner-Stone Bookshop, The Grand Onion and at the door the night of the concert. Ticket prices are $17 for general admission, $12 for seniors and students and $5 for children 12 and under.

The Champlain Valley Oratorio Society (CVOS) is a non-profit choral organization of volunteer members who rehearse and perform under the direction of Jo Ellen Miano, associate professor of music at SUNY Plattsburgh. Since 1983, the organization has provided local singers the opportunity to perform choral-orchestral masterworks and contribute to the cultural life of the North County community. CVOS welcomes new members.
