College Presents Sampling of Public Events Through Early January


PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2008) - The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh is pleased to announce a calendar of events through early January. This calendar contains a sampling of arts, workshops, talks and other events at the college, all of which are open to the public and many of which are free of charge.

Monday, Dec. 1

SUNY Plattsburgh College Council meeting, 1 p.m. Videoconferencing Room 416, Sibley Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh campus.

"Gossip in the Workplace," 1 p.m. Room 203, Yokum Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Part of a series of workshops hosted by business and professional communication students geared toward improving the workplace. Free and open to the public.

World AIDS Day Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony, 4 p.m., Angell College Center Lobby, SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Members of the campus and community are invited to take part in the annual ceremony in honor of the victims of AIDS. The event will include some brief remarks from Dr. Jerimy Blowers, director of health education services and Nick Strange, member of ONE. The brief ceremony will conclude the lighting of the AIDS Memorial Tree and music by Alex Newman. The event is hosted by the Center for Student Involvement and ONE. "Marketing for Profit: Marketing 5 P's," 5:30-8:30 p.m., Cornell Cooperative Extension in Malone. This presentation is designed to help new and beginning entrepreneurs to identify and plan their rural and farm enterprises. Rick Leibowitz, the regional director of the North Country Small Business Development Center, and other presenters will discuss the ins and outs of marketing, including Internet marketing techniques. Poetry Reading with Jazz Combo, 8 p.m. Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center, SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Visiting poet and recording artist Barry Wallenstein will perform with the SUNY Jazz Combo. Wallenstein has three labels with Cadence Jazz Records: "Euphoria Ripens," "Tony's Blues," and "Pandemonium." Sponsored by the Visiting Poets and Writers Series and coordinated by Alexis Levitin, the performance will feature music and vocals, hip poetry and improvised jazz.

"Voices of Men," 7 p.m. Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh campus. "Voices of Men" is a one-man play, working to end men's violence against women. It is a funny and provocative educational comedy that uses multimedia and celebrity impersonations to engage the audience in reflection about positive transformation. Soulful Christmas Celebration, 4:30 p.m. E. Glenn Glitz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh campus. The Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir's annual Christmas concert will feature works by James Cleveland, Richard Smallwood, Joe Pace, Donald Lawrence, Kirk Franklin and much more. The group will also perform Christmas songs with a little taste of gospel. Favorites like "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "Joy to the World" and "Go Tell It on the Mountain" will be sung at the concert.

Saturday, December 13

Winter Commencement, 11 a.m. Field House Gymnasium. An estimated 500 students will graduate. Angel Acosta, president of the Student Association, will be the student speaker.

"Andy Warhol: Portraits from the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy," Jan. 23-March 29, noon-4 p.m. daily, Burke Gallery, Myers Fine Arts Building, SUNY Plattsburgh. This exhibit features a selection of original Polaroid photographs and gelatin silver prints given to the Plattsburgh State Art Museum by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in honor of the foundation's 20th anniversary.
