CD Release Party for Rick Davies 'Salsa Nortena' to Be Held at FlynnSpace

SUNY Plattsburgh Professor Rick Davies’ Latin band, Jazzismo, will be joined by a Grammy-winning pianist as it takes the FlynnSpace stage in a special jazz cabaret evening Thursday, July 26.

Arturo O'Farrill — founder and director of Lincoln Center’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, the recipient of a 2008 Best Latin Jazz Album Grammy for the album “Song for Chico” — will join Jazzismo in the 7:30 p.m. concert. The performance will feature original works by O’Farrill in addition to compositions from the newly released CD “Salsa Norteña.”

The CD is the latest by composer/trombonist Davies, whose 2006 “Siempre Salsa” made the top 10 charts in Italy, Japan and Colombia.

Composed of eight original high-energy songs, “Salsa Norteña” features four instrumental Latin jazz tunes with guest artist Ray Vega on trumpet alongside other veteran musicians from New York, Montreal and Vermont.  Vega has performed with the likes of Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Mel Torme, Paul Simon, the Duke Ellington Orchestra among others. “Salsa Norteña” also includes típico NYC-style salsa songs featuring Papo Ross and other top Latin musicians from Montreal on lead vocals.

“The bright, colorful and irresistible collection of Latin grooves is delicately arranged and expertly, vibrantly executed with immaculate taste,” wrote critic Dan Bolles in his review of the album for the Vermont weekly Seven Days.

Tickets for the live performance cost $19 for adults and $15 for students. The price includes a $1 Preservation Fee, which goes to support long-term maintenance of the historic Flynn Theater for the Performing Arts. They may be purchased at FlynnTix [email protected] or by calling FlynnSpace at 1-800-86-FLYNN between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

The CD is available at CDBaby, iTunes, Amazon, and numerous other sites. Visit http://www.salsanortena.com for more information. Jazzismo is composed of Rick Davies, trombone; Arturo O'Farrill, piano; Alex Stewart, tenor saxophone; Calvin Crosby, bass; Zachary O'Farrill, drums; and Steve Ferraris, percussion.
