Now-to-Next Career Fair Set for March 29, 2017 | SUNY Plattsburgh

This year’s Now-to-Next Career Fair will bring more than 70 employers to campus March 29.

About 420 students attended last year’s fair, making the event the largest of the year for the SUNY Plattsburgh Career Development Center.

“The career fair is an important opportunity to learn about jobs and careers directly from employers and alumni,” said Tobi Hay, career counselor and employer relations specialist at the Career Development Center. “It’s also a chance to practice talking to employers and learn the art of introducing oneself and making a strong first impression.”

Of the employers recruiting on campus the day of the fair, more than a dozen will be alumni of the college, which gives students first-hand access to the college’s alumni network. Students should wear business casual or business formal attire, bring several copies of their resume and university ID card for admission.

“The best way to prepare is to think about what questions you have for employers, which employers you want to talk to, update your resume and practice a nice, firm handshake,” Hay said.

Event Benefits All Students

Attending the event will benefit all students, not just seniors, so all students should consider attending, Hay said.

“My advice to students is to come to the Career Fair even if you’re not looking for a job. It’s a great chance to learn about companies and non-profits, and to practice talking about yourself before there is a potential job on the line,” Hay said.

Employers also look to fill internship positions and summer job openings at career fairs, and these positions become their “hiring pipeline” for full-time positions, she added.

“Employers are also happy to see first years, sophomores and juniors attend because it shows a commitment and that they are thinking about their careers.”

Career Development Center Services

Students can get help with their resumes at the Career Development Center’s walk-in hours, Monday through Friday from noon to 2 p.m. Additional evening walk-in hours are available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Students can also schedule an appointment with a career counselor by stopping by their office in the Angell College Center or by calling them at 518-564-2071.
