Cardinals Picked for Third in ECAC-West Preseason Poll


CAPE COD, Mass. - Plattsburgh State earned 85 points and was predicted to finish in third place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division women's hockey preseason poll released on Tuesday by league officials. The balloting was conducted by the 10 head coaches in the ECAC West.

The Cardinals are anticipating 16 players returning off last season's squad that went 22-5-2 overall, including 15-3 in the conference, ended up third in the NCAA Division III national rankings and made their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2009-2010 edition when Plattsburgh plays its annual Red/White game at 2 p.m. Saturday.  The Cardinals will also host an exhibition against an opponent to be determined on Nov. 7 or 8. The team officially opens the season Nov. 14-15 at conference foe Chatham in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Rochester Tech, which lost to Plattsburgh in the 2009 ECAC West tournament quarterfinals, is pegged the team to beat this season. The Tigers compiled 131 points, including six first-place votes.

Defending conference champion Elmira edged the Cardinals for second place in the coaches' poll by only three points, receiving 88 to go along with four first-place votes.

The rest of the voting included: 4. Neumann, 71 points; 5. Utica, 55; 6. Oswego, 52; 7. Chatham, 36; 8. Potsdam, 27; 9. Cortland, 26; and 10. Buffalo State, 18.
