Cardinal Points Named All-American Newspaper


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ Cardinal Points , the student newspaper of the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, has been named an All-American newspaper for the spring 2005 semester by the Associated Collegiate Press.

This honor marks the seventh such ranking for Cardinal Points , the first under the leadership of Editor in Chief Derek Constable. A May graduate, Constable immediately began his post-SUNY Plattsburgh career as a reporter at the Saratogian in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Constable is originally from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Along with the All-American ranking, Cardinal Points also received four Marks of Distinction in the following areas: coverage and content; writing and editing; layout and design; and leadership.

Student-editors and managers for the spring 2005 semester were:

Derek Constable, editor in chief, from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.;

Sarah Brooks, managing editor, from Fort Johnson, N.Y.;

Oksana Poltavets, news editor, from Brooklyn, N.Y.;

Ryan Hutchings, from Schenectady, and Dan Shepard, from Schenectady, associate news editors;

Sheena Furnace, life editor, from Massena, N.Y.;

Gabe Bowen, associate life editor, from Cadyville, N.Y.;

Rueben Ortiz-Diaz, sports editor, from Brooklyn, N.Y.;

Matt Bleiberg, associate sports editor, from Brooklyn, N.Y.;

Allison Labriola, opinions editor, from Pleasant Valley, N.Y.;

Kelly Whitford, photography editor, from Stormville, N.Y.;

Michael Betts, art director, from Fishkill, N.Y.; and

Tanya Tsavaris, advertising/business manager from Mattituck, N.Y.

Shawn Murphy, associate professor of journalism, is the faculty advisor to Cardinal Points . He has advised the newspaper since 1998.

The All-American designation is a national award for journalism excellence in student publications at institutions of higher education. Colleges and universities of all sizes compete together for the All-American ranking. The honor is bestowed on only about 20 percent of college newspapers nationwide and is awarded by semester.
