Campus Radio Station Hosts 4th Annual Starv-A-Thon

PLATTSBURGH, NY __ WQKE, the student-run radio station at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, will host its fourth annual "Starv-a-thon" on Saturday, Nov. 18, to benefit local food shelves.

Station members pledge to starve themselves until they collect at least 939 canned food items, representing the station's frequency, 93.9 FM. WQKE members encourage the community to assist them in collecting canned goods by dropping off contribution throughout the day on Rugar Street in front of the Angell College Center between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

"We're pledging not to eat anything until 939 canned goods are collected," said Leticia Wallace, WQKE promotion director. "And even though we expect the weather to be pretty cold during our food drive, it's a small price to pay to help benefit those in need in the local community."

All donations will be presented to the Salvation Army's Food Shelf in time for the upcoming holidays.

WQKE, also known as "The Quake," is a student association organization that was founded at the College in 1966 as AM station WSUP. The station changed to WPLT when it switched to FM stereo in 1974, and later changed its call letters to WQKE in 1997.
