Brahms worked on his Requiem for more than a decade. Dedicated to the whole of humanity and more specifically to his friend, Robert Schumann and Brahms' mother, "A German Requiem" was first performed in its entirety in 1869. The German musical community embraced the work. Schumann's wife, Clara, describes the work in a letter to Brahms, saying it is a "truly tremendous piece of art which moves the entire being in a way little else does."
