Annual Jazz Festival to Feature Latin Musicians from Montreal
The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music will celebrate its 35th annual Jazz Festival
with a jazz concert and Latin/Caribbean dance party Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May
7.
Directed by Dr. Rick Davies, the festival features special guest artists, vocalist
and saxophonist Jorge “Papo” Ross from the Dominican Republic, percussionist Morris
Salazar from Colombia, and drummer Jonathan Maldonado from Venezuela. All three now
hail from Montreal. Internationally known jazz trumpeter, Ray Vega, will also perform
along with Rick Davies and Salsa Norteña and the SUNY Plattsburgh Jazz Ensemble and
the Mambo Combo.
On Friday, the Festival Jazz Concert will feature Ross, Salazar and Maldonado with
the Jazz Ensemble and the Mambo Combo. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the E. Glenn
Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. Tickets, available in advance at the Angell College
Center desk or at the door, are $8 general admission, $5 seniors, area students, SUNY
Plattsburgh faculty and staff, and $2 for SUNY Plattsburgh students.
On Saturday, the Jazz Festival concludes with a Latin/Caribbean dance party with
Davies and Salsa Norteña, as well as festival guests Ross, Maldonado, Salazar, Vega
and the Mambo Combo. The party will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Naked Turtle
Holding Co., 1 Dock St., Plattsburgh. Latin dance instructor, E. Victoria Moore from
SalsaLina Dance Studio in Burlington, Vt., will lead the dancing with a workshop beginning
at 6 p.m. Free.
