Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Community Commemoration Jan. 17


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Community Commemoration will be held Monday, Jan. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the Blessed John XXIII College Community Newman Center, 90 Broad Street, Plattsburgh.

This annual event is held to reflect on King's contributions to the cause of the civil rights of all people and the continued struggle for peace in the world today.

This year's featured speaker is Dr. Kenneth Palm, D.D.S. Palm and his family, former long-time residents of Plattsburgh, currently reside in Burlington, Vt. where he is the co-owner of Colchester Family Dentistry and an adjunct associate professor of dental hygiene at the University of Vermont. While in Plattsburgh, Palm and his wife, Phyllis, were active members of the MLK Commission and served in leadership positions in the commission for several years.

The annual Dr. King Day celebration, sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commission of Clinton County, is supported by contributions from the Mayor's Office of the City of Plattsburgh, Sodexho Campus Services and the College Community Newman Center.

A free-will offering will be taken during the celebration to benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Commission Scholarship Fund, which provides annual scholarships to local high school students pursuing post-secondary educational goals. The 2004 MLK scholarship recipients were Donte Ray, a Saranac Central High School graduate who is attending SUNY Geneseo, and Lindsey Wilfore, a Beekmantown High School graduate who is attending Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire.

The commemoration is open to everyone and all are invited to attend.
