Academic, Service Excellence Recognized at President’s Welcome Address

Faculty and staff excellence was recognized and applauded during the annual President’s Welcome Aug. 24 where 11 colleagues received Chancellor’s, Faculty/Staff Impact, Outstanding Adviser, and the SUNY Distinguished Service Professor awards.

jon chatlos newPresident John Ettling surprised Dr. Jon Chatlos, associate professor of English, with the 2017-2018 Outstanding Academic Adviser Award. Nominations are sought during the spring semester for an award that recognizes advisers who have “significantly enhanced advisees’ educational experiences by being readily available for them and demonstrating a genuine interest in and concern for their overall educational experience.”

The Office of Alumni Relations honored Dr. Nancy Church, distinguished service professor of marketing and entrepreneurship emerita, and Jackie Vogl, associate vice president for global education, with the 2018 Faculty/Staff Impact Award.

Ettling also called the seven Chancellor’s Award-winning faculty and staff members to the stage in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium to present their medal and certificate.

  • Michael Devine, associate professor of English, Michell Ouellette, assistant professor, public relations, and Dr. Rajesh Sunasee, associate professor of chemistry, received the award for excellence in teaching
  • Patricia Egan, associate professor of psychology, was the recipient of the award for excellence in faculty service
  • Karina Ckless, associate professor of chemistry, received the award for excellence in scholarship and creative activity.
  • David Gregoire, assistant vice president for institutional advancement, received the award for excellence in professional service
  • Melanie O’Connell, secretary II in the Office of the Dean of Arts and Science, is recipient of the award for excellence in professional service.

Dr. Timothy Mihuc, professor of environmental science and director of the Lake Champlain Research Institute, was recognized for having been promoted to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Service Professor. A ceremony and portrait unveiling will take place later in the fall in Feinberg Library.
