Physical Education Elective Program

What Will I Learn?

This program will help you:

  • Develop a lifetime fitness program
  • Use the water to exercise (water aerobics) or learn to swim
  • Learn the basics in golf, martial arts, tennis or ice skating
  • Experience the Adirondacks by learning to rock or ice climb, free-heel or beginning downhill skiing or kayaking

If you are looking for employment during the school year or in the summer, you should check out the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course that includes certification for life guarding, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for the professional rescuer, automated external defibrillator (AED) and waterfront guarding. The water safety instructor course certifies you to teach swimming to youth groups and adults. Both these courses have a prerequisite skill test.

Many majors and agencies are now requiring CPR and first aid certifications. An American Red Cross CPR/first aid course is offered each quarter throughout the year. Nursing and communication disorders and sciences students are required to have this certification before starting their clinical experience and fitness centers require all employees to be certified. This course instructs a layperson how to respond to and care for a victim for the first 10 minutes of an emergency.

Theory courses in wellness/fitness, coaching and exercise programs are available for students interested in the areas of coaching and personal fitness.
