How to Apply
First, refer to the program page on this site or the other SUNY schools site if you want to participate on another SUNY program. The application deadline will be either at the top or bottom of the screen. Please keep in mind that if you are going on another SUNY school’s program, their application deadline might be different than Plattsburgh.
If you are accepted on another SUNY program, you MUST complete the other SUNY Program application. This will give you access to the course approval form where you will write down the classes you are taking abroad and how they will transfer back to Plattsburgh.
Here is a general checklist for you will need to submit as part of the online application:
- Official Transcripts — We must have official transcripts from each college or university you have attended. Plattsburgh students should also note that you too must request official transcripts from the SUNY Plattsburgh Registrars Office. Please follow these instructions for requesting a transcript.
- Study statement — Type a one to two page statement explaining why you want to study abroad and how it fits in with your college plans and beyond. Please ask your academic advisor to sign on the bottom of your study statement to acknowledge their awareness and approval of your intentions to study abroad.
- Two academic references — You will simply type in your references name and contact information. The system will then automatically generate an email to your reference instructing them how to submit their materials.
- $35 application fee
How to Apply for National Student Exchange
NSE is only open to SUNY Plattsburgh students. Apply to National Student Exchange. Please note that the application deadline for NSE is different than the deadline for studying abroad. The NSE application is due in February.
What Happens Once I Apply?
Once the application deadline has passed, we review all applications for completeness and quality. We then send applications that are complete and meet the host institutions minimum eligibility criteria abroad for a final decision. As soon as our office sends your application abroad, we will email you notifying you of your nomination and you will need to go back into your online application to see what documents you will need to submit before you depart.
In most cases, host institutions accept the students we nominate. However, there are cases when they do not, and their reasons are mostly due to limited space. For that reason, we ask that you prepare for departure after you have received your first letter from SUNY Plattsburgh, but not to make any financial commitments to the program (i.e., buying a plane ticket) until you have an acceptance letter from your host institution.
