Steps to Apply

As each program has different requirements, applications to apply and deadlines are located on the individual program pages under “application information.” Please keep in mind that if you are going on another SUNY school’s program, their application deadline might be different than SUNY Plattsburgh.

As part of the online application, you will need to submit the following:

  • Official Transcripts — For most programs, we must have official transcripts from each college or university you have attended. Plattsburgh students should also note that you, too, must request official transcripts from the SUNY Plattsburgh registrar’s office. Instructions for requesting a transcript from SUNY Plattsburgh.
  • Study Statement — Type a one to two page statement explaining why you want to study abroad and how it fits in with your college plans and beyond. You should consult your academic advisor about your intentions to study abroad to determine academic planning.
  • Two Academic References — You will simply type in your references name and contact information. The system will then automatically generate an email to your reference instructing them how to submit their materials.
  • Pay the $35 application fee

Other SUNY Programs

If you are accepted on another SUNY program, you MUST complete the other SUNY Program application. This will give you access to the study away course approval form where you will work with your department/advisor to outline what courses you plan to take and what the equivalent course is at Plattsburgh that will be transferred back.

How to Apply for National Student Exchange

National Student Exchange (NSE) is only open to SUNY Plattsburgh students. Review the National Student Exchange (NSE) program page prior to applying. Please note that the application deadline for NSE is different than the deadline for studying abroad. The priority application deadline for NSE is due in February. Students can still apply and attend NSE after the February deadline, but availability may be limited.

What Happens Once I Apply?

Once the application deadline has passed, we review all applications for completeness and quality. We then send applications that are complete and meet the host institutions minimum eligibility criteria abroad for a final decision. As soon as our office sends your application abroad, we will email you notifying you of your nomination and you will need to go back into your online application to see what documents you will need to submit before you depart.

In most cases, host institutions accept the students we nominate. However, there are cases when they do not, and their reasons are mostly due to limited space. For that reason, we ask that you prepare for departure after you have received your first letter from SUNY Plattsburgh, but not to make any financial commitments to the program (i.e., buying a plane ticket) until you have an acceptance letter from your host institution.
