Prepare for a career in physical therapy

Get on the right track to get into graduate school.

Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration

Students of several of our majors have successfully applied to become a physical therapist in the past. The PHPAC will help make sure that you are prepared to apply to PT programs.

Academics

If you are a biomedical sciences major, you will take all of the important prerequisite classes for PT programs application as part of your major. If you are not one of these majors, it is important to take the following classes:

  • General Biology (BIO101, 4 credits with lab)
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO326 and BIO327, 8 credits with lab)
  • General Genetics (BIO305, 4 credits with lab)

The Honors Program at SUNY Plattsburgh is an important way to show academic excellence. You should take advantage of this opportunity if possible.

Healthcare Experience

Schools will often expect you to have between 50 hours of experience shadowing a physical therapist. We can offer you and excellent opportunity to get these hours through our affiliation with Meadowbrook Healthcare, a rehabilitation facility.

Applying to PT School

Application to Physical Therapy schools is through the PTCAS system. Most program deadlines are in the fall for the following year. The PTCAS system will process your application (up to five weeks) and then submit it to the schools you select. Submit your PTCAS application and arrange for materials to arrive at PTCAS by the program's deadline. Many schools have rolling admissions, which means they accept qualified candidates as their applications become applications become complete, including GRE scores.

“The curriculum taught by the experienced faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh challenged and pushed me out of my comfort zone to grow into the scholar I am today. The professors and the learning center provided the assistance I needed along the way. I could not have done it without SUNY Plattsburgh!”
