Thomas Venne


Adjunct Lecturer of Music

Tom Venne is an adjunct lecturer teaching Bluegrass guitar and directing the Bluegrass Ensemble at SUNY Plattsburgh. He is also the faculty advisor for the Bluegrass Club on campus. Tom began his musical journey performing country music from 1967 until 2004. During this time, he performed with numerous Grand Ole Opry stars as both an opening act and a supporting guitar player/vocalist. Tom was inducted into the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999 while playing with a band called, appropriately, The Upstate New Yorkers. In 2004 Tom, along with his sister Julie and Dobro legend Junior Barber, started a bluegrass group called Beartracks. The group, who have released five CDs, has performed on a regular basis at festivals throughout the U.S. in New England, Colorado and Pennsylvania. They have also appeared in numerous festivals and shows in Canada from Calgary to PEI.

Tom is a SUNY Plattsburgh alumni and retired from a successful career in U.S. Customs before joining the faculty as an adjunct lecturer in 2015.
