SUNY Distinguished Service Professor: Inorganic Chemistry I and II, General Chemistry
Originally from the Philadelphia area where he did his B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry
at St. Joseph’s University, Ed joined the staff of SUNY Plattsburgh in 1984 after
completing a Ph.D. at the University of Delaware. Since then he has taught general,
organic, analytical, physical and inorganic chemistries focusing on methodologies
for solving chemical problems using structure and bonding principles. Ed has also
held various administrative positions on campus and currently serves part-time as
director of applicant data systems at the SUNY System Administration Office. In addition
to chemical inquiries, Ed is also active in the area of student affairs, planning
and enrollment management. Ed likes to share his time with students, so he is active
as an advisor to Greeks and freshmen dormitory floors. He also participates on enrollment
management committees and institutional research efforts.
Married with two daughters, Ed enjoys time with his family. He has also been active
in many local area charitable groups since coming to Plattsburgh. Outside of chemistry,
Ed enjoys studying theological texts, books on developmental and planning theories,
and reading mysteries.
The central focus of his chemical research has been the study of organmetallic polymers
containing manganese and the study of the bonding parameters of cobalt metallocenes.
The studies require the synthesis of the organic precursors with subsequent bonding
of the metal and polymerization. These efforts are now moving into the area of molecular
orbital studies to support the bonding interpretations from previous spectroscopic
investigations.
