Mathematica is a software application for computations. It’s also a development platform fully integrating computation into complete workflows, moving you seamlessly from initial ideas all the way to deployed solutions.

How to Get Mathematica

Mathematica is currently installed in the following campus locations:

Computer Labs

  • Open access lab and computer science labs

Computer Clusters

  • Grid computing, or HPC work, is possible through SUNY Plattsburgh’s Mathematica license. If you are interested in using Mathematica on a dedicated research cluster, or in an ad hoc, or distributed, grid environment, please let Andy Dorsett at Wolfram Research know.

Mathematica can also be installed at no cost on:

  • Faculty/staff school-owned machines. Please send an email to Alyssa Drowlette to have Mathematica installed on your office machine.
  • Faculty/staff personally owned machines. Request Mathematica. Our site license number is L3321-2396.
  • Students’ personally owned machines. Request Mathematica for Students through this link and download through the Wolfram User Portal.

First Steps for New Users

If you are new to Mathematica, here are some suggestions on the best ways to get started.

Step 1 Get a quick overview of Mathematica. First Ten Minutes with Mathematica 8: This screencast provides an overview of the important features that you’ll want to explore during your first ten minutes with Mathematica.
Step 2 Watch a tutorial screencast. Hands-on Start to Mathematica: Follow along in Mathematica as you watch this multi-part screencast that teaches you the basics how to create your first notebook, calculations, visualizations, interactive examples, and more.
Step 3 Explore the Learning Center. Learning Center: Browse through this extensive collection of Mathematica tutorials, examples, and other resources to learn more about using Mathematica.
