Program Description

• About the Program

  Youth Ambassadors is a three-week exchange for high school students (age 15–18) and adult educators focused on civic education, community service, and youth leadership development. Additionally, students live with U.S. host families for a portion of the exchange, which is a truly formative experience in cultural immersion. Upon return to their home, students are required to complete a community service project with the support of their mentors and fellow Youth Ambassadors. This program is fully funded by the US government.

• Program Goals (as defined by the U.S. Department of State)
  • To develop a cadre of young adults who have a strong sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to community development, an awareness of current & global issues, and strong interpersonal leadership skills;
  • To foster relationships among youth from different ethnic, religious, and national groups; and
  • To promote mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration between the United States and our Western Hemisphere counterparts.
• Dates & Locations

  The Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada is an intensive program with three segments:

  1. Pre-departure orientation in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to take place July 15-16, 2019
  2. Exchange experience in the United States of America to include:
     1. Plattsburgh, New York and the Adirondack Park from July 17 to 27, 2019
     2. Washington, D.C. from July 28 to 31, 2019
     3. Return to Ottawa and then home from August 1 to 2, 2019
  3. Follow-on community service activities in Canada to be implemented following the exchange experience during the 2019-2020 school year.
• Costs

  There is no cost to apply.

  Travel, meal, and lodging costs associated with participation from July 15 to August 2 are covered by the Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada, thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

  Health care benefits with limitations are provided in the U.S.A. for accepted participants.

  Participants are required to provide only personal spending money.
