Digital Milennium Copyright Act (DMCA) - Do's and Don'ts

Copying and Sharing Files: What You Can and Can't Do

You Can

  • Get involved and get active. If you feel that the current state of copyright leaves a little to be desired, you're not alone. Copyright legislation is perpetually evolving, and numerous advocacy groups have web sites that provide opportunities to get involved in the discussion of your rights as a consumer of CDs, games, software, and videos.

You Can't

  • Copy, redistribute, or download software, CDs, videos, or games unless the copyright holder gives you explicit permission to do so.
  • Expect to get away with breaking copyright in the digital age: you risk being sued by the copyright holder, and you risk a wide range of campus disciplinary actions.
