Logging on to the Web Server

One of the virtues of FrontPage is that it allows you to work directly with files on the web-server: you don't have to worry about FTP or other file transfer mechanisms.

In order to take advantage of this immediacy, you have to be connected to our faculty web server--and this means logging on.

Your faculty website at Plattsburgh State University will be hosted on the web server at http://faculty.plattsburgh.edu, and your site will be named using a convention of firstname.lastname. For instance, Ben Thayer's website would be found at http://faculty.plattsburgh.edu/ben.thayer/

The username you'll be using to gain access to your FrontPage website is the same as your email username: your password is your LDAP password -the last four digits of your social security number followed by (in capital letters!) the first four characters of your last name.

Armed with this information, you can launch FrontPage and log onto your web site. If you've never opened your web site before, your site won't be listed in the Open Web dialog: type the full URL to the root folder of your site into the field marked Folder name .(i.e. http://faculty.plattsburgh.edu/your.name). If, on the other hand, you've opened the web in the past, you can open it again by selecting it from the list of "web folders" that appears in the Open Web dialog.

Logging On

Having selected your website, you'll have to log on-and it's a good thing, too! Otherwise anyone on the planet would be able to make changes to your website.

To log on to your web site, you'll need to supply both a Name and a Password . Remember, you're using your email username for your name, and your LDAP password (see above) for a password.

Name and Password Required dialog

Enter the appropriate information as required by the dialog window, and then click the OK button.

Once you've completed these steps, you'll be connected to your site on the server, and FrontPage will show a view of your web site.
