Creating Hyperlinks
To link one page to another page, or link one part of a page to another) are easily created in FrontPage. To create a hyperlink, select the word or words that you would like to have your page visitors click on, and then click on the "Create or Edit Hyperlink" button (the button appears in the standard toolbar:
). The following dialog will appear:
To create a link to a page on your web site, you need only scroll through the listing of files and folders to find the page you'd like linked.
To create a link to a site on the World Wide Web, you can either type the address directly into the URL
field, or you can click on the button resembling a globe
--this button ("Get URL from Web") will launch your web browser. Use the browser to navigate to the page that you'd like linked, and then (without closing the web browser) switch back to FrontPage
by clicking on the button representing FrontPage on the Windows taskbar at the bottom of your screen
. The URL field will contain the full internet address of the site you were viewing in the web browser.
To create an e-mail link, click on the button that resembles an envelope
and enter a full email address (i.e. peter.friesen@plattsburgh.edu).
To create a link to a brand new page, click on the button resembling a blank page
.
To create a link to another location on the current page, you'll first have to identify what that location is. Scroll up (or down) to the location you'd like to make the destination of a hypertext jump, and then click on Insert|Bookmark . You'll see a listing of all bookmarks on the page and have the option of adding a new one.

To add a bookmark, simply type the name into the "Bookmark Name" field and then click on the OK button. To link to that bookmark, go through the same steps of selecting a word to serve as the "hotspot" and then clicking on the "Create or Edit Hyperlink" button. The dialog illustrated above will again appear, and this time, instead of typing a URL or clicking on the buttons beside the URL field, you need only specify then name of the bookmark in the "Bookmark" field. |
To test your hyperlinks, you'll have to be looking at your web page from a browser or through the FrontPage Editor's "Preview" mode. Clicking on the "Preview in Browser" button
on the standard toolbar will load your page into a web browser, allowing you to check your links. A similar function is served by selecting Edit|Preview in Browser from the menu: if you have more than one web browser installed (and, ideally, you should), this will introduce a dialog inviting you to select which browser you'd like to use for the preview. The final mechanism for previewing a page lies in the Preview
tab at the bottom of the FrontPage Editor's screen: this is probably the handiest mechanism for quickly checking out how pages will look, but you should be forewarned that it's also the least accurate of all three.
