Common Course Web Images

The Faculty webserver at Plattsburgh State University has a number of shared image files (visit http://faculty.plattsburgh.edu/common/ ), including the following set of images that can serve as buttons on your Plattsburgh State course website.

Image When to use the Image
Illustration of a Syllabus button Use the syllabus button to link to your course syllabus page
Illustration of an Announcements button Use the announcements button to link to a page having class announcements: don't bother with an announcements page, though, if you're not planning on ever posting anything to it.
Illustration of an Assignments button Use the assignments button to link to a page that outlines student assignments.
Illustration of a Readings button Use the readings button to direct visitors to a page which includes a listing of the printed texts or online sources being used in the course, a reading schedule, and specific reading assignments.
Illustration of a Discussion button Use the discussion button to direct your students to your course's discussion forum.
Illustration of an Email button or Illustration of an Email Instructor button Use the email or the mail instructor button to link to a page containing an e-mail form. It is not recommended that you use this button as a direct mailto link: that function should be provided at the bottom of each page.
Illustration of a Help button Use the help button if there are aspects to your site (or its navigation) that need explaining.
Illustration of a blank button Blank button: you can add your own text/graphics to this one...
The buttons appearing below this point should be used only if your web site contains the security provisions that will enable you to deliver the particular pieces of information without violating the provisions of FERPA (Family Educational Records Privacy Act). Visit http://www.clhe.org/3a2-1.htm for the FERPA regulations. Ordinarily, this means that you'll have to protect the information so that only the student involved can see it. Restricting access to individual students will generally require scripting and/or database queries, so the very first button is one that you'll almost certainly need.
Illustration of a Password button Use the password button to link to a form that prompts for a password.
Illustration of a Class List button Use the class list button to link to a page having student names and e-mail addresses: such a page can promote discussions of course materials among students, but you should not list any student names and/or e-mail addresses on a page that can be accessed by the general public, and you should not post student contact information without first seeking the permission of the student.
Illustration of a Grades button or Illustration of a View Grades button Use the grades button to link to a page that returns a student's grades for an assignment or for the course. Again, you must take special pains to ensure that the confidentiality of the grades is retained and that neither the general public nor the other students in the class have access to the grades of any given student.
