How do I Join a Fraternity or Sorority?
In order to join, you must have completed 12 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.3 at Plattsburgh State. Students who do not meet this requirement (including first semester students) may attend fraternity/sorority programs and events; however, they may not join or accept ANY form of membership in a fraternity/sorority. Students, organizations and members who fail to adhere to this policy are subject to judicial action, including suspension from the college.
- Learn about fraternity/sorority life at New Student Orientation. Check orientation schedule for time and location of Fraternity/Sorority 101. Families are highly encouraged to attend the Fraternity/Sorority 101 session designed specifically for them. Most members report that they never intended to join a fraternity or sorority when they came to SUNY-Plattsburgh. While many students initially say that they do not plan to join, many change their minds when they discover all of the benefits of membership.
- Keep an eye out for posters in the residence halls, the Angell College Center, and on Cardinal Cable for fraternity/sorority events, grab a few friends and attend.
- Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to the fraternity/sorority members you meet in classes, on your residence hall floor, or in other clubs and organizations.
- Check out the Student's Guide to Fraternities and Sororities for more information on how to choose an organization that is best for you.
NOTE: Students may NOT join organizations that have lost recognition from the College. These organizations have been closed by the College and international organizations because they were not upholding fraternal values and were engaging in risky behaviors that endangered themselves and other students. Students who join organizations that are not recognized by the College are subject to judicial action, including dismissal.
