(Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations)

1.0         Purpose
To establish a policy and procedure that describes the accreditation bodies such as JCAHO for facilities that must be accredited as prescribed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and its accompanying regulations.

SUNY does not interpret our relationship as that of a business associate.
Accreditation requirements are still under consideration. If the requirement for business associate contracts with accreditors is not eliminated, the JCAHO will provide a uniform business associate addendum to its accreditation agreement for health care organizations. The JCAHO is continuing to strongly urge that this requirement be eliminated.
