CAS111 - Introduction to Canada (3 cr.)
A multidisciplinary introduction to the Canadian experience from the perspective of the social sciences and humanities. Sections deal with history, geography, politics, culture, economy, etc. of Canada. Relations with the U.S. are discussed. Distinguished guest lecturers participate. (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer). Liberal arts.
CAS215 - Canadian Art Survey (3 cr.)
This course is designed to introduce students to Canadian Art. Art as a product of its time and place will be the central theme throughout the course. Art as a way a culture perceives and expresses itself will be a secondary focus. Students will have an experiential learning experience as part of a field trip to Canada. They will learn to make presentations to the class. They will use the facilities of the smart classroom and PowerPoint and/or similar software. (Spring). Liberal arts. Prerequisite: CAS111 or POI.
CAS216 - Inuit Art (3 cr.)
Survey of Inuit Art from the Prehistoric Period to the Contemporary Period. Includes all-expense-paid field trip to Canada. (Fall). Liberal arts. Prerequisite: CAS111 or POI.
CAS305 - Quebec Culture Through Cinema (3 cr.)
This course explores Quebec culture through film. The films screened follow three broad categories: traditional Quebec society in transition, the Quebec sovereignty movement, and recent films that depict a modern society and its film culture. Liberal arts. (Spring). Prerequisite: CAS111.
CAS358 - Canadian Cinema: Past and Present (3 cr.)
Canadian films are examined in the context of Canadian film history and in comparison with U.S. films. Besides analyzing each film for film language, structure and texture, general and specific differences between Canadian film and the typical "Hollywood formula" film of the same genre will be explored. The class also examines Canadian practices of film production, distribution, exhibition, and funding. (Fall/Spring). Liberal arts. Prerequisite: CAS111.
CAS359 - Profiles of Quebec. (3 cr.)
Profiles of Quebec provides a multi-disciplinary introduction to Quebec from the perspectives of the social sciences and the humanities. The course examines Quebec's geography, history, economics, politics, culture, literature, and arts, as well as Quebec's quest for recognition as a distinct actor in the international political system. A field trip is included. (Every second or third semester). Liberal arts. Approved AWR. Prerequisite: CAS111 or POI.
CAS375 - Borderland and Migration History: Canada and the United States (3 cr.)
A study of the migration streams between Canada and the United States from the colonial period to the present. Canada-U.S. migrations are examined in a global context, addressing social, political, economic, and cultural issues. (Every other year). Liberal arts. Prerequisite: CAS111 or HIS101 or HIS102 or HIS171 or HIS172.
CAS379 - Quebec in the United States: Franco-American History and Culture (3 cr.)
This course examines the history and culture of French-Canadian descendants in the United States. It will explore issues of gender and class, the social significance of language, the effects of assimilation, and the challenges faced by contemporary Franco-Americans. (Every other Fall). Liberal Arts. Prerequisite: CAS111 or HIS101 or HIS102 or HIS171 or HIS172.
CAS412 - Topics in Canadian Studies (3 cr.)
Topics of current interest in Canadian Studies which are not currently covered extensively in other Canadian Studies courses. Seminar course with extensive reading, discussion, analysis, and writing by students. (Fall/Spring). Liberal arts. Prerequisites: CAS111, ENG101.
CAS413 - Topics in Canadian Art (3 cr.)
Different topics in Canadian art will be offered that examine a specific period or aspect of Canadian art history. Seminar format with class discussion in "smart classroom" setting. Field trip to art galleries in Canada. (Fall/Spring). Liberal arts. Prerequisites: ENG101; CAS111 or POI.
CAS498 - Internships in Canadian Studies (1 to 6 cr.)
Internships in Canada and the United States in such placements as Canadian Embassies and Consulates, multinational corporations, U.S. Consulates, the New York State Office of Economic Development, and at the Center for the Study of Canada. Experiences focus on business, politics, and communications, though all backgrounds can be considered. Up to 6 credits can be earned. (Fall - Spring). Liberal arts.
CAS499 - Independent Study (1 to 15 cr.)
Project individually arranged by student and faculty sponsor. Requires completion of the Independent Study form and approval by the Faculty Sponsor, Academic Advisor, Department Chair and Academic Dean.
