Academic Support
Academic Year
Each EOP student is assigned an EOP staff member who serves as the student's official academic advisor during the freshman year. However, our graduate assistants, counselors, Associate Director and Director are available to assist all EOP students throughout their time at Plattsburgh State with a wide range of questions and concerns:
- Course selection for upcoming and future semesters
- Study skills for various courses
- Campus resources and activities
- Majors and career options
- Financial aid and money management
- Graduate school planning
- Adjustment to college issues
- Personal issues
Summer Institute
Our EOP professional staff will meet with each prospective freshman during the 4-week Summer Institute to review their schedules for the fall and make any needed changes. All Summer Institute students will take placement exams during the summer for math, English & foreign language. The results of these exams will determine which courses students may take in the fall. Students' intended majors will also determine which courses students should take, as well as students' interests and backgrounds.
Freshman Seminar
All EOP freshmen are required to take FRS 101: Freshman Seminar during the fall semester of their freshman year. This two-credit course, which is taught by EOP, is designed to address numerous areas of adjustment to college life:
- Time management
- Study skills
- Academic planning
- Career decision-making
- Ethics
- Campus involvement & resources
- Stress management
Tutorial Services
EOP students are encouraged to take advantage of a variety of tutorial services on campus. All students may utilize the Claude J. Clark Learning Center, but EOP students may also utilize tutorial services coordinated by the program. EOP provides individual tutoring in subject areas not covered by the Learning Center. The program also coordinates learning teams, which are led by learning team leaders.
Learning Teams/Learning Team Leaders
EOP Learning Teams are review groups that meet regularly during a semester. Learning teams are composed of students who are enrolled in a particular course. Learning teams may cover multiple sections of a course, but are led by a single learning team leader (LTL) who previously completed the course. An LTL communicates with the instructor(s) of a learning team course, create helpful teaching and study materials, create a friendly and active learning environment, and assist students with EOP students with:
- Effective study skills
- Textbook reading
- Exam preparation
- Presentation preparation
