Bringing Students and Local Community Together

The mission of Project H.E.L.P (Hands Engaged in Linking People) is to provide students with volunteer experiences that are compatible with their interests, passions, talents, and skills and that foster a sense of personal and civic responsibility while meeting the needs of the local community.

Project H.E.L.P. strives to meet the needs of the community, while providing students with opportunities to volunteer in areas of their interest. Students have rewarding experiences, gain insight into societal issues, have fun, and also build strong relationships with community members and other students.

If any of the volunteer opportunities mentioned below are of interest to you, please take a minute to fill out a volunteer interest form and submit it to us. Someone from Project HELP will contact you after they receive it to go over your interests.

Project H.E.L.P. has a wide variety of on-going service programs for students at SUNY Plattsburgh. Keep in mind that most on-going programs are a long term commitment. If this is an issue, look below at our one-time volunteer opportunities.

Need a Ride? We also are able to provide transportation for volunteers to many sites Monday through Friday during business hours.

Volunteer Opportunities With Children

Momot Elementary School Lunch Buddy - Volunteers assist teachers on the playground by playing with children, supervising, and organizing games or activities. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Oak Street Elementary Study Buddy - Volunteers assist students in grades three through five in completing homework assignments in an after-school program. Volunteers are needed Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Champlain Valley Family Services Peer Mentoring Program - Mentors are able to boost a child's self-esteem, expose a child to new ways of being, and help them to discover their full potential. Volunteers are matched with an elementary student and spend time with the student during his or her lunch hour at least twice a month.
Stafford Middle School Mentoring Program - Volunteers assist middle school students with academic and social concerns. Volunteers can be utilized during any of their free time as long as the school is open.

Opportunities With the Elderly

Meadowbrook Nursing Home - Volunteers are needed to assist with activities such as Bingo, Arts & Crafts, social events and friendly visiting. Times vary each week depending on the activities scheduled and the availability of the volunteer.

Soup Kitchen

Salvation Army Soup Kitchen - Volunteers assist with meal preparation, serving the meals, and clean up. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

One-Time Volunteer Opportunities

If you are unable to commit to an on-going service site, Project H.E.L.P. also provides students with various opportunities for one-time volunteer experiences.

Project H.E.L.P. assists a number of agencies in Clinton County with their one-time service event needs. Some examples include:

Fundraising for American Heart Association's Heart Walk
Adopt-a-Block neighborhood roadside clean up
Fundraising for the March of Dimes, and
Food drives for local food shelves.

On-Going Volunteer Opportunities

Project H.E.L.P. has a wide variety of ongoing service programs for students at SUNY Plattsburgh. These service sites are looking for volunteers that are willing to make a commitment of as little as 2 times per month to as frequently as your schedule will allow. Don't forget, we are also able to provide transportation for volunteers to many sites Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please take note of the following rules and guidelines for the Project H.E.L.P. van:

Van rides are typically offered from 9:00AM-4:00PM, Monday-Friday. Please understand van availability is subject to change due to conflicts in the schedules of the Project HELP Coordinators.
Sign up at least 24 hours ahead of time for a van ride.
Make sure you put your phone number on the sign-up sheet.
Arrive a few minutes early & make sure you sign up for the time you want to leave, not the time you would like to arrive at your site.
If someone is signed up for 10:45 and you want to leave at 10:50, try to get to the office by 10:45. It is impossible to bring someone at 10:45 and then come back for someone else at 10:50.
If you must cancel a van ride, please let us know! You may call the office, 564-4830 but please tell us. By the same token, if you decide to walk home or have your friend pick you up from your site, please let us know so we are not waiting for you.

Group, Club, and Organization Volunteers

If you are a member of a campus club, group, or organization and would like to receive more information about gruop volunteer opportunities, please stop by the Project H.E.L.P. office to register for your own group mailbox. We'll drop important volunteer opportunities and events as we get requests and you'll be one of the first to know. All we need to start is your Community Service Chair's (or designated member in your organization's) contact information and we'll get you set-up.
