SUNY Plattsburgh 2010 Conference on Teaching and Learning

Pull the Plug and Light the Fire is the theme for our upcoming teaching and learning conference, hosted by the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh and the SUNY Plattsburgh Center for Teaching Excellence.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus.

Call for Proposals

We invite submission of proposals for interactive workshops and presentations on college-level teaching and learning across academic disciplines, in keeping with the conference theme, Pull the Plug and Light the Fire. Successful proposals will clearly articulate how the session will focus on teaching without the aid of technology. Priority will be given to proposals that address how the presenter plans to incorporate interactive methods into the conference presentation without the aid of PowerPoint or other technologies.

Explore Skills and Attitudes at the Heart of Great Teaching

This conference is an opportunity to explore the essential pedagogical skills and attitudes that are at the heart of all great teaching. Of particular interest is the possibility that well-intentioned efforts to adopt technology in the classroom are actually distracting us from our core task, which is to teach in a way that most advances learning.

In order to facilitate a conversation about teaching in its most fundamental aspects, we ask for proposals for sessions that help participants step back from technology and step into an engaging and effective teaching persona. Sessions may be directed toward development of specific teaching techniques or discussions about philosophies of teaching. All sessions should be designed for the maximum participation and engagement of attendees. Suggestions for possible topics:

Program formats

Interactive sessions will last 60 minutes, with audiences of 15 to 30 participants. Ideally, sessions will be conducted by one to three speakers on a topic appropriate for discussion, learning and intellectual exchange.

Submissions will be reviewed by the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and the CTE Task Force. Presenters will be notified by December 1, 2009, of their acceptance. The committee will select programs that demonstrate the greatest potential for contributing to the quality of the conference.
