How to Apply for Federal and State Aid

Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Note: In order to apply to federal, state and some institutional aid programs at Plattsburgh, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and TAP on the Web each year. You may submit your FAFSA as of January 1st. We encourage applicants to complete the FAFSA by February 15th to qualify for all available aid resources. Here's how to apply:

Step 1: Create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID

The FSA ID is used to log into certain U.S. Department of Education websites and electronically sign FSA documents.  The student applying for financial aid, and at least one parent in the household (if a dependent student), should create a FSA ID.   Go to, select "Create an FSA ID", and follow the instructions.  Once submitted, you will be able to use your FSA ID right away.  You will receive an email with a secure code to verify your email address, and although optional, upon doing so you will be able to use your email address as your user name when logging into FSA applications.

Step 2: Complete the FAFSA

After receipt of your FSA ID, students complete the FAFSA online at For all forms of financial aid with limited resources, SUNY Plattsburgh gives priority to students whose FAFSA data is processed by February 15th.  Also, when completing the FAFSA online, we encourage both parents and students to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if presented with the opportunity to do so.  This will reduce the likelihood that you must submit additional documentation.

Step 3: Include the SUNY Plattsburgh school code

While completing the FAFSA online, list SUNY Plattsburgh as one of your school selections. The federal school code for SUNY Plattsburgh is 002849.

Step 4: Complete TAP Application

New York State Residents also have the opportunity to apply for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) online. On the confirmation page at the end of the online FAFSA, select the appropriate link to apply for TAP on the Web. The TAP school code for SUNY Plattsburgh is 0940. If you overlook this link, visit and complete your TAP application online. Paper TAP applications are only available upon request from HESC.

Step 5: Receive Award Letter

The Financial Aid Office begins e-mailing financial aid award letters around March 1st. Your award letter notifies you of your financial aid eligibility and advises you of additional steps/actions to finalize your award offers.

Step 6: Respond to Inquiries

During this entire process, respond promptly to any inquiries from federal and state agencies, and from the Financial Aid Office. Any delays will only impede the review process, e-mailing of award letters, and disbursement of funds.

Step 7: Bill Payment

Process your tuition bill (also called confirming enrollment) once it is available online.  You will receive an email from the Student Accounts Office when your bill is ready.  Pay close attention to its due date, and follow the instructions for removing optional fees, accepting or waiving medical insurance, chosing cardinal cash, making payment and other processing activities.
