Part of our job at SUNY Plattsburgh is to provide you with learning experiences (both textbook and real) that will give you the tools that you need to develop skills and make the best choices for your future.

If you just go through the “motions” of getting an education then you will come out as “motionless.” This does not render you as very employable. If you only try to understand the theory of sound business practices without understanding applications you will only become a theorist. A theorist is good in some areas, but is not what the marketplace is asking for.

Who is required to take the exam?

SBE students majoring in accounting, business, business administration, entrepreneurship, finance, global supply chain management, international business, management, management information systems and/or marketing.

What is the Business Exit Exam — BUS 489?

All majors in the SBE (except economics & hospitality management) at SUNY Plattsburgh must register for and pass the Business Exit Exam (BUS 489) in order to graduate. NOTE: If you passed MGM 490 prior to spring 2011 at SUNY Plattsburgh, you have already met this requirement. The Business Exit Exam (BEE) focuses on the core business knowledge areas and serves as a direct assessment of student learning in the SBE. There is a Moodle review site that all registered students will gain access to prior to the exam. Topic areas on the review site correlate with the questions on the exam.

At what point can I register for the BUS 489 (Business Exit Exam)?

Once you have achieved junior standing (60+ credits) and have completed ACC 202, ACC 351, ECO 260, FIN 355, MGM 275, MGM 280 & MKE 290, you are eligible to register for BUS489.

When is it offered?

The exam is administered each fall and spring semester. Please contact us for dates and times.

How well do I have to do on the exam?

A letter grade will be assigned for the exam. A “D” or better is required for graduation. Grades are calculated based on standard deviations above or below the mean as outlined below.

A: SCORE > Test Mean +1.75 standard deviation
B: SCORE > Test Mean +1.00 standard deviation, but less than or equal to 1.75 standard deviation
C: SCORE within one 1 standard deviation of the Test Mean
D: SCORE < Test Mean -1.00 standard deviation, but less than or equal to -1.75 standard deviation
E: SCORE < Test Mean -1.75 standard deviations

How should I study for it?

The best way to study is to review your books and notes from ACC 202, ACC 351, ECO 260, FIN 355, MGM 275, MGM 280 & MKE 290 as well as review documents that will be made available to you on the BUS 489 course site via Moodle once you have registered for the exam.

What if I forget to register for it?

Check on Banner to find out who is administering the exam for that semester. Contact that person to let him/her know that you are not registered and to inquire about space.

Can I retake the exam if I don’t pass?

Yes. You can take the exam up to 3 times. If it is not your last semester at SUNY Plattsburgh, you can simply register to take the exam again the following semester. If it is your last semester, you should contact the test administrator to arrange a retake during the same semester.

Your Advisor

All School of Business and Economics students are assigned an advisor from their major department. The advisor’s name will appear on the top of your Degree Works Audit and on MyPlattsburgh. You may change your advisor at any point by obtaining a form in SBE or the Academic Advising office (Feinberg 1st floor). You only need the signature of your new advisor.

Your Major/Minor

• Your current major(s) is listed on the top of your Degree Works.
• You may change your major at any time by obtaining a form in SBE or from the Academic Advising office (Feinberg 1st floor).
• You may declare a minor area of study at any time. Forms are available in SBE.

Almost all SBE majors start with the same core of classes so that you are free to change. If you are considering accounting, economics, finance, or hospitality management you need to be aware of the sequence of classes so you are prepared to make the change. You will be fairly safe until the mid-point of your sophomore year.

Do You Need a Minor?

A minor area of study will make you more marketable in your future endeavors. You may declare a minor in any area of the college. Courses for some minors can be taken as general education electives and others can be double counted from your major program of study, so plan ahead and discuss this with your advisor.

Major & Minor Requirements & Course Sequences

We have curriculum sheets available in SBE listing all requirements and the registration sequence for each major and minor in SBE. These sheets are located across from the faculty mailboxes in Redcay.

It is VERY important that you look at this guide often. It not only lists the courses that you must complete and in which sequence, but also make yourself aware of the prerequisites involved for each class that you plan to take.

What is a Prerequisite?

A prerequisite is a course (or learning experiences or class level) that must be taken or completed prior to enrolling in a given class.

For example: MGM 280 Principles of Management has the prerequisites of ENG 101 (English 101), either ECO 101 (Principles of Economics) or both ECO 110 (Macroeconomics) and ECO 111 (Microeconomics). This means that you must have completed or be in the process of completing these listed prerequisite courses to enroll in MGM 280.

Your DegreeWorks audit and your academic transcript are extremely important tools for academic progress and success.

• Degree Works is broken down into basically 3 areas:
  1. SUNY Plattsburgh Graduation requirements.
  2. General Education requirements.

The responsibility to meet the requirements for graduation by the intended graduation date, both with respect to selecting courses and to completing them satisfactorily, ultimately rests with the student.

Your Transcript

Your transcript is located on Banner Web — Student Menu — Student Records Menu.

Your transcript will tell you how many hours you have registered for and completed each semester. You are responsible for each course for which you register.

Your transcript will be the official record of your academic performance at SUNY Plattsburgh and will go with you into your future. Your transcript will also give you cumulative values of credits earned and your GPA. You must earn a minimum of 120 credits and have a cumulative and major GPA of 2.0 to graduate from SUNY Plattsburgh.

Registration Advisement

Registration occurs at least 2 times each academic year, once in the fall for spring classes, and once in the spring for summer and fall classes. This is also a good time to check your program of study, general education requirements, and graduation requirements with your advisor. This will be key to keeping on track toward degree completion and academic success. All registration and schedule adjustment is done online at SUNY Plattsburgh. You will need to become very familiar with Banner Web.

Join a School of Business & Economics Club or Honor Society

Your education is enhanced by what you put into it. Joining one or more of our SBE student clubs and honor societies is very important to your future. Think of this as a resume building experience.

Internships & Careers

SBE is fortunate enough to have its own Office of Internships and Career Opportunities in Au Sable 321. This office will assist in helping you find, apply for and complete an internship.

An internship is usually considered after you have completed your sophomore year. Many students take on an internship during the summer, but it is also possible during the regular academic year if you are ahead in your studies or you are doing an internship in the Plattsburgh area. You and your advisor may select an internship in your area of interest from our list of available internships.

Think of this as a resume-building experience. An internship is also a good way to find the right fit for your future.

Study Abroad

Study abroad is not required of SBE students, but again is a significant contributor to your future success. There are many opportunities available to SBE students in Europe, Australia, Canada, and Mexico. Global education and understanding is so very important to the success of today’s business managers and leaders. Think of this as a resume building experience.

English Requirement for School of Business & Economics Students

All students must take the English placement examination before they can register for ENG101, a general education requirement for all students.
Note: Please take this exam very seriously.

Exceptions

Students who have received transfer credit for ENG 101 with a grade of C or better from an accredited college or university. The official transcript of this credit must be on file in the admissions office and the credit will appear on your transcript and Degree Works report.

Math Requirement for SBE Students

All SBE majors must complete CALCULUS I (SUNY Plattsburgh course: MAT 221 or MAT 224). This course will not only meet a business cognate requirement but will also fulfill the Math General Education requirement.

Placement Information

In order for students to be eligible to register for Calculus I, they must meet one of the following requirements:

1. Have a score of 460 for SAT or 16 for ACT to bypass the MAT placement test and have demonstrated knowledge at the level of Precalculus.
2. Passed the MAT placement exam at SUNY Plattsburgh given at the beginning and end of each semester and have demonstrated knowledge at the level of Precalculus.

Exceptions

Students who have received transfer credit for CALCULUS I from an accredited college or university. The official transcript of this credit must be on file in the Registrar’s Office and the credit will appear on your transcript and in Degree Works.

Beta Gamma Sigma is the honor society serving business programs accredited by A.A.C.S.B. International — The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Eligibility Requirements

While almost 300,000 students in the U.S. receive a baccalaureate or master’s degrees in business each year, less than 20,000 earn a membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. To be eligible for nomination, you must:

• be a business major with an academic ranking that places you in the upper 7 percent of the junior class or upper 10 percent of the senior class with a minimum of a 3.5. Both the overall quality point average and the QPA in major are used for this test; and
• be at least a junior with 45 on-campus credit hours of which 18 must be in the major.
