Meet the Women's Tennis Staff

Mark Stata, Head Coach

Mark Stata '82 was promoted to head coach of the Plattsburgh State women's tennis program in August 2004, after serving the previous four years as an assistant under Matt Mero.

Entering his fourth season at the helm, Stata has helped the Cardinals into the upper-echelon at the fall State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships.  In his very first season, Plattsburgh finished fifth in the team standings and just five points shy of fourth place.  In 2005, the Cardinals were in a three-way tie for sixth but only two points away from fifth and six short of the No. 4 position.  Last October, the team was just two points shy of fourth place.

Stata has coached players to several accomplishments:  Plattsburgh native Tiarra Garrow captured the 2006 SUNYAC No. 3 Singles Championship as a freshman; Valerie Papi has been a quarterfinalist at No. 1 singles and she reached the No. 2 singles semifinals last season; Justine Higgins made the SUNYAC Sweet 16 at No. 2 singles in 2005; Angela Roy made the No. 3 singles conference semifinals two years ago; and the No. 1 doubles duo of Ashley Abar and Ashley Smith qualified for the SUNYAC championship match a year ago.

In addition, Stata developed a 2006 spring season for the first time so that the team members can hone their skills and remain competitive against intercollegiate opponents.

A 16-year veteran ice hockey official, Stata works professionally as the manager of information technology for Wyeth Research in Chazy, N.Y., and has been with the company since 1983.

He graduated from Plattsburgh State in 1982 with a double major in computer science and business management.  He also earned an associate's degree from Clinton Community College in applied science in business management in 1979.
