Cardinals Denied in Penalty Kicks

ONEONTA, N.Y. -  No. 3-seeded Brockport and No. 2 Plattsburgh State battled to a scoreless double overtime draw on Friday afternoon at the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, but the Golden Eagles won the penalty-kick shootout 5-4 to advance to the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship game.  While the result will go into the record book officially as a tie, Brockport exacted a measure of revenge by bouncing back from a 3-0 defeat in Plattsburgh on Sept. 27.

The Golden Eagles will bring a 10-5-2 record into Saturday's conference title clash against Cortland, which upset regular season champion Geneseo 6-5 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie in the first semifinal.  The Cardinals end the year with a 14-3-2 mark.

During the shootout period, the teams traded successful PK attempts until the third round when Andrew Fusco gave Plattsburgh a 3-2 edge.  But then Brockport made its last three shots and goalkeeper Kyle Sauln stuffed two of the last three tries by the Cardinals to seal the "win."

Brockport dominated play during regulation by getting off 17 shots to nine for Plattsburgh, including a 5-1 advantage during the extra sessions.

Cardinals goalie John San Filippo, who finished with seven saves for the game, wraps up his four-year career as the school's all-time leader with a 0.40 goals-against average and second with 41 victories.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -   The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team came from behind to edge visiting Oneonta State, 2-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex.  Plattsburgh improves to 11-3-1 overall, and 4-2-1 in the SUNYAC, earning its first win over the Red Dragons since the 1981 season (1-0).  Oneonta, which was the 2007 SUNYAC regular season champion with a perfect 11-0 league mark, falls to 8-4-1 and 4-3 in the conference.

With the victory, Plattsburgh snaps an 8-game losing streak to Oneonta and gives 24-year head coach Chris Waterbury his first win ever against the Red Dragons.

The hosts took the lead for good in the 72nd minute when Danny Faiella scored his second goal of the season on a rebound of a shot by Ryan Ormsby off the crossbar.  Plattsburgh's David Hickman tied it 1-1 on a penalty kick goal, his second of the year, in the 41st minute after an Oneonta defender was whistled for a hand-ball inside the penalty area.

Oneonta used a set piece early in the first half to get on the scoreboard first.  Nicholas Lange sent a direct free kick into front of the Plattsburgh goal 6 yards out where Matt Lindemann headed home his second of the season into the back of the net in the 15th minute.

Plattsburgh pressured Oneonta in the first half by getting six shots to the Red Dragons' one--which was Lindemann's goal.  The Cardinals enjoyed a 14-5 shots advantage for the game, and they dominated in corner kicks, 11-2.

Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute on senior Bryan Patterson's team-high fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Matt Kutzer served a long pass toward the top of the box from the right side and Patterson knocked a header over Plattsburgh senior goalie John San Filippo, who had charged off his line.

Plattsburgh had an excellent chance to take the lead in the 78th minute, but junior Joe Bogart's shot from in close rang off the crossbar and out of play. In the waning moments, the Red Dragons pressured and Patterson sent a header just wide after freshman E.J. Reutemann's original shot was blocked.

In the first overtime, Mankowski's early bid from the right side was denied by Steve Axtell. Cortland senior Dave Jacques nearly had the chance to end the game in the 96th minute when he broke in alone but couldn't control a pass from Patterson and could not get off a shot.
