Brockport Edges Host Plattsburgh in Shootout for SUNYAC Title

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Brockport Golden Eagles claimed their first State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer championship since 1978 by virtue of taking the penalty-kick shootout, 11-10, over host Plattsburgh State on Saturday at the Cardinals Field House Complex. The top two seeded teams battled to an official scoreless tie after two overtimes, but the 10-5-3 Golden Eagles earn the SUNYAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The nationally No. 20-ranked Cardinals hope their 13-2-5 overall record merits an at-large bid from the national tournament committee. The 59-team field will be announced on Sunday evening and the brackets will be revealed at 10 a.m. Monday.

SUNYAC tournament most valuable player Joe Marino of Brockport made nine saves to offset a relentless Cardinals offensive attack. Plattsburgh had 19 shots (Brockport, 6)--including advantages of 10-2 in the second half and 3-1 in both 10-minute overtimes--and more corner kicks (10-6).

Plattsburgh's Pat Shaughnessy had the game's first solid scoring chance 5 minutes after the opening kick-off, but his header with pace from six yards out was stopped by Marino. Later in the half, Mike Payne sent a through-ball into the box that was just out of the reach of open Cardinals Joe Bogart and Brandon Levine. Chris Taylor nearly put the Cardinals ahead late in the game when one shot just sailed over the crossbar and Marino turned back a blast from 25 yards.

Brockport's two best scoring chances came off a flick header by Brad Lefort in the 14th minute and a scramble in front of the Plattsburgh goal after a corner kick.

More details to come later.

Top Seeds Plattsburgh, Brockport Advance to SUNYAC Finals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team won its 499th game in program history on Friday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Oneonta State, propelling the top-seeded and nationally 20th-ranked Cardinals into the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship game. Tournament host Plattsburgh (13-2-4 overall) will play second-seed Brockport, which was a 1-0 winner against Geneseo in today's first semifinal game at the Cardinals Field House Complex, on Saturday (1 p.m.). There is no admission charge.

Plattsburgh and No. 4-seed Oneonta played to a scoreless first half but it was the Cardinals that had the 2-0 edge in shots and most of the territorial control.

The Cardinals finally broke through against a strong goalkeeping performance by Johnathan Korn. On a set piece from near the left sideline about 35 yards from goal, Chris Taylor sent a free kick into the top of the goalie box where Joe Bogart had a flick header for his second goal of the season in the 74th minute. It was Taylor's 15th assist--two shy of tying the single-season school record.

Earlier in the second half, Plattsburgh had two excellent scoring chances but Korn made two saves on shots by Pat Shaughnessy and Bart Misiak from point-blank range. The senior goalie finished with five saves.

Plattsburgh's Andy Heighington, a freshman, made one save for his seventh career shutout.

The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons 9-2 and had more corner kicks (3-2). Oneonta fell to 12-5-2.

Brad Lefort scored his fifth goal of the season to lift Brockport to a 1-0 win against the No. 3-seed Blue Knights, who end their year with a 9-7-2 mark. The Golden Eagles improve to 10-5-2 and will look to avenge a 4-1 loss at home to the Cardinals on Sept. 25. Jeff Palumbo was credited with an assist on the play.

Opposing goalies Mike Madarasz for Geneseo and Joe Marino for Brockport each had four saves. Brockport had advantages in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (3-2).

Regular-Season Champions Land Five on All-SUNYAC Team

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Nationally NSCAA 20th-ranked and regular-season league champion Plattsburgh State earned five spots on the State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer all-conference team, the SUNYAC release on Thursday. Junior midfielder Chris Taylor along with junior backs John LoGuirato and Bart Misiak received first-team accolades, senior midfielder David Hickman placed on the second-team and senior back Mike Pinamonti made third-team. The Cardinals' five selections represents the second-most behind Oneonta--the No. 4 seed in this weekend's SUNYAC Tournament--which had eight all-conference players. Plattsburgh tied runner-up Brockport with three SUNYAC first-teamers.

Taylor, of Liverpool, England (Cardinal Heenan Prep), repeated on the all-conference first team and was recognized for the third time in his career. He leads the SUNYAC and is tied for third in the NCAA with 14 assists, which is three shy of the school single-season record. He also has four goals and is Plattsburgh's leading scorer with 22 points.

It's no coincidence that the majority of Plattsburgh's back line are SUNYAC all-stars because the Cardinals' defense is second in goals-against average (0.78; Brockport, 0.77), fewest goals allowed overall (15), first in SUNYAC games-only scoring defense (0.44) and first in SUNYAC games-only shutouts (6). In fact, Plattsburgh pitched shutouts in their final five conference games, extending an opponents' scoreless streak of 539 minutes and 29 seconds. Misiak (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Martin's Secondary), who was named an All-American as a sophomore, is a three-time all-SUNYAC performer.  LoGuirato, the 2006 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, is also a three-time all-conference choice, including the first team the last two times. The Holbrook product out of Ronkonkoma Sachem North High School has scored two goals and six points. Pinamonti, of Farmingville (Sachem East HS), has contributed a goal and an assist while starting all 18 games, and he achieves his first all-SUNYAC nod.

Hickman, who is from Lake Grove High via N.C. Wesleyan University, helps Taylor dictate an offense that ranks second in goals scored with 39, or 2.17 per game. The Cardinals are also No. 1 in SUNYAC with a plus-24 scoring margin over their opponents. Hickman has one assist on the season.

Top-seeded Plattsburgh (12-2-4) hosts the SUNYAC tournament this weekend at the Field House Soccer Complex, playing fourth-seed Oneonta at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Saturday's championship game kicks off at 1 p.m.

Previewing the SUNYAC Tournament: Plattsburgh, Brockport are Top Two Seeds

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Regular-season champion Plattsburgh State will host the State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament this weekend at the Cardinals Field House Complex. Friday's semifinal matchups are No. 3-seeded Geneseo against No. 2 Brockport at 1 p.m., followed by No. 4 Oneonta versus top-seeded Plattsburgh at 3:30 p.m. The winners will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday in the conference title game, vying for an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. There is no admission charge for the three conference postseason contests. Plattsburgh is the first on-campus site for the semifinals and finals since the SUNYAC moved its tournament to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta from 1999 to 2008.

For fans that cannot make it to the North Country, the Plattsburgh Sports Information Office will be providing play-by-play descriptions on its LiveStats feature during both days of competition. The link is http://www.sidearmstats.com/plattsburgh/msoc/

The host Cardinals (12-2-4 overall) climbed two spots to No. 20 in this week's national rankings by the NSCAA coaches' poll, released on Tuesday. They had their season debut in the Top 25 on Oct. 27 to extend a 17-year streak of appearing in that organization's poll at some point during the season. Twenty-five year head coach Chris Waterbury has steered the program to its 11th straight berth in the SUNYAC Tournament, securing a first-round bye and No. 1 seed by virtue of going 7-1-1 in conference play. Captain Chris Taylor leads the offense with 22 points on four goals and SUNYAC-leading 14 assists. The Cardinals own the SUNYAC's best scoring defense--at 0.44 goals per game--in nine conference-games only, led by Bart Misiak who was a 2008 third-team All-American as a sophomore, Mike Pinamonti, John LoGuirato and Gurtej Dhillon.

Second-place Brockport went 9-5-2 overall, including a 7-2 league mark. The Golden Eagles are making their 11th appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament. They are entering the postseason on a roll, having won seven of their last nine games to follow a five-game winless streak (0-3-2). Steve Abgarian paces Brockport in goals (11), assists (4), points (26) and shots (51). But the team boasts the SUNYAC's best defense, allowing the fewest goals (14) in all games this season. Brockport and Geneseo are tied in their all-time series at 25-25-6, but the Golden Eagles are searching for their first conference title since 1978.

The Blue Knights, with two SUNYAC crowns in 2004 and 2006 among 13 all-time tourney appearances, come in with a 9-6-2 record, including 5-3-1 in the league. Jason Tartick is the team' top scoring threat with five goals and 13 points, plus 41 shots. Colin Begy is the top playmaker with four assists among his 10 points. Mike Mooney joins the Cardinals' Waterbury as the SUNYAC's top-two coaches with 25 years' tenure.

Oneonta (12-4-2) tied Geneseo for third place in the SUNYAC standings with identical 5-3-1 conference ledgers, but was designated the fourth seed because the Red Dragons lost to the Blue Knights, 3-1, on their home field on Oct. 2. Oneonta has sandwiched five SUNYAC tournament berths around NCAA Division I scholarship classification from 1989 to 2007. The Red Dragons this season were known for their high-octane offense, racking up a SUNYAC-best 41 goals. Thank the 1-2 scoring punch of Evan Jedynak (11 goals, 28 points) and Eric Fortier (10, 26) for that. The defense also posted a league-high eight shutouts, but ranked tied for third in scoring defense at 1.00 goals per game. The Red Dragons are accustomed to quick starts, outscoring their opponents 17-3 in the first half and going 8-1 in their first nine contests.

Cortland, as the fourth seed, won the 2008 SUNYAC championship with a 2-0 victory over Brockport in Oneonta.

Shaughnessy Lifts No. 22 Cardinals to Draw at Saint Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. -- Pat Shaughnessy's breakaway goal in the second half lifted nationally ranked Plattsburgh State to a 1-1 tie at Saint Lawrence in non-conference men's soccer action under a steady rain on Wednesday at Sandy MacAllaster Field. The No. 22 Cardinals are now 12-2-4 overall after finishing the regular season on an eight-game unbeaten streak (5-0-3), while the host Saints settle at 7-6-1 to break a four-game losing streak.

The Saints had the best chance to win it in the first overtime, but Brendan Gorman's shot hit the inside of the post and bounced away.

Shaughnessy took advantage of the Saint defense and split two defenders after the ball was headed up the field and went in alone on Saint goalie Nate Goss-Woliner, sending a shot to the far post for his seventh of the year to knot the game in the 58th minute.

Sam DeMello put SLU up 1-0 with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute when he scored on a direct kick from 20 yards out. The freshman increased his season goal total to six.

Despite the soggy conditions both teams had good looks on net, combining for 49 shots. SLU had the edge 28 to 21, including 7-4 in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Andy Heighington had seven saves for the Cardinals, and Goss-Woliner finished with nine stops.

Plattsburgh Debuts in NSCAA Coaches' National Poll

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team made its season debut Tuesday in the NCAA Division III national rankings by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the NSCAA announced today. The Cardinals check in at No. 22 this week after a 1-1 tie with Union (N.Y.) and 5-0 win over Potsdam recently, pushing the team's overall record to 12-2-3. Click Here for Complete NSCAA Top 25 Poll

Plattsburgh extends a 17-year streak of appearing in the NSCAA Top 25 rankings at some point during the season, which is currently the longest in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. This is the program's first entry in the coaches' poll since Sept. 23, 2008. The Cardinals are also receiving votes in the latest D3soccer.com poll for the second straight week.

The Cardinals will take a season's best seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) into their regular-season finale at North Country rival Saint Lawrence on Wednesday. The non-conference date is a final tune-up for the SUNYAC Tournament, which Plattsburgh will host the semifinals and championship on Nov. 6-7 as the No. 1 seed with a 7-1-1 conference mark. The team clinched its first SUNYAC title of any kind since 2005 on Saturday after the five-goal victory against the Bears.

Cardinals Clinch First SUNYAC Regular-Season Title Since 2005

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Plattsburgh State captured its first State University of New York Athletic Conference regular-season men's soccer title in four years by virtue of a convincing 5-0 win Saturday over visiting SUNY Potsdam at the Cardinals Field House. The Cardinals, who improve to 12-2-3 overall, also earn the right to receive a first-round bye in the SUNYAC Tournament and host the conference semifinals and championship (Nov. 6-7) because they finished in first place with a 7-1-1 league slate. The Bears end their season at 3-12-1 and 1-8 in the SUNYAC, losing six straight.

After a slow start, Brandon Levine put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the 27th minute by taking a feed from Chris Taylor. The teams went into the halftime break with the same score.

Taylor added a goal of his own in the 59th minute when he struck a neatly placed direct kick into the upper-left corner of the frame from 45 yards out on the right side of the field.

Joe Griffin then made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute and both John Martin and Jarred Antonucci added their first career goals in the 65th and 84th, respectively. Like Taylor, Levine made it a three-point day by getting the secondary assist on Martin's tally.

Back Gurtej Dhillon chipped in two assists.

Freshmen goalkeepers Andy Heighington and Zack Kruizenga combined on the Cardinals' seventh team shutout this season. Potsdam starter Joseph Glackin made four stops.

The Cardinals also dominated the Bears in shots (20-3) and shots on goal (9-2).

Plattsburgh Battles Visiting Union (N.Y.) to Draw in Key East Region Matchup

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (By Steven Figliozzi, SID Intern) -- The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team gave up its first goal in five games and ended in a 1-1 tie with the Union College Dutchmen at the Field House Complex on Tuesday. With the draw, the Cardinals extended their home unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents to 28 games, going 26-0-2 since a 3-1 loss to Saint Lawrence on Oct. 27, 2004.

The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Erik Hakim picked up his first career collegiate point with an assist when he crossed the ball to sophomore midfielder Brandon Levine, who then centered to Pat Shaughnessy and he headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Shaughnessy’s sixth of the season, which ties him for second on the team with 18 points.

The Cardinals held Union off the scoreboard for the next 33 minutes until the Dutchmen answered with a goal of their own in the 52nd minute. After a Plattsburgh foul, a Union player sent a direct kick from the left side into the penalty area as John Mara found a loose ball in the 6-yard box and unguarded, he tapped in for his first goal of the season.

The two teams played the rest of the game physically but both couldn’t find the netting. Plattsburgh had a couple chances to go ahead within five minutes of the tying goal as Joe Griffin and Mike Payne sent shots wide from close range.

In the closing minutes of regulation, Union nearly pulled out the win when Jack Scott's floating shot hit the crossbar and sailed over the net with 1:07 left.

Plattsburgh held much of territorial play for the game, including 8-3 in corner kicks.  But the Dutchmen held an 8-7 shots advantage, including 3-1 in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Plattsburgh Records Fourth Shutout in a Row to Beat Fredonia

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team inched closer to securing the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Fredonia State at the Cardinals Field House Complex. The Cardinals ran their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) to improve to 11-2-2 overall and retain sole possession of first place with a 6-1-1 SUNYAC mark. The Blue Devils drop to 6-5-3 and 2-2-2 in the conference.

Matt Hamilton, Pat Shaughnessy and Joe Griffin each scored a goal and had an assist to carry the Plattsburgh offense. Hamilton put the Cardinals ahead to stay, 1-0, in the 19th minute, taking a feed from Shaughnessy in the box and heading the ball past Fredonia goalkeeper Thom Cavanaugh for his sixth of the year.

Besides the scoreboard, the Cardinals also dominated in shots (18-4), shots on goal (10-0) and corner kicks (9-0). Andy Heighington didn't have to make a save to earn his sixth shutout this season.

Cavanaugh ended up with seven saves.

Second-Half Goals Propel Plattsburgh over Buffalo State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Gurtej Dhillon assisted on both goals scored by Anis Makaren and Pat Shaughnessy as the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team blanked visiting Buffalo State 2-0 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game at the Cardinals Field House on Friday evening. The Cardinals, who recorded their third consecutive shutout, improve to 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the SUNYAC. The Bengals lost their fifth straight to drop to 5-8-1 and 1-4-1 in the conference.

The Buffalo State defense ensured that the teams would go into the intermission scoreless 6 minutes into the first half when Brandon Levine was stymied at point-blank range by a Bengal back sliding across the wide-open goal to deflect the shot. Levine collected the rebound but his second shot went wide.

But in the 77th minute, the Cardinals broke through as Makaren flicked a header for his team-leading eighth goal into the lower-left corner off a Dhillon free kick from the right side. Then less then a minute later, Shaughnessy headed in his fourth goal off a cross from Dhillon.

Plattsburgh dominated the game in shots (17-4), shots on goal (7-0) and corner kicks (8-2). The Bengals didn't get off a shot until the 25th minute when Steve Orfanos's right-footed blast went wide.

Freshman goalkeeper Andy Heighington chalked up his fifth career shutout to improve to 10-2-1 for Plattsburgh. Ryan Wiehl came in for injured starter Brian Dudek in the 49th minute and made three sprawling saves to keep the Bengals close.

Cardinals Shut Down Hawks on the Road

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Joe Bogart and Joe Griffin each scored their first goal of the season 1 minute and 10 seconds apart late in the first half to key Plattsburgh State's 3-0 win Saturday over host New Paltz State in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer action at Alumni Field.  The Cardinals improve to 9-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the SUNYAC, extending their road unbeaten streak to 9-0-1 dating to last season.  The Hawks fall to 6-6-1 overall, including 1-5 in the conference.

Although Plattsburgh dominated the scoreboard, 2-0, at the half, it was actually New Paltz that kept the Cardinals on their heels in the early going. Dave Gardiner nearly put the Hawks up 1-0 in the 7th minute when his one-timer off Nick DiPaolo's cross was just wide of the left post.  A minute later, Jimmy Altadonna received a through-ball from Tommy Garafola and Altadonna's shot was saved by the Cardinals keeper Andy Heighington. A few minutes later, Gardiner again was stopped by the diving Heighington after a throw-in by Garafola was deflected to Gardiner.  On the proceeding corner, Mike Santalesa played a ball into the box and found Gardiner for the header that sailed just over the cross bar.

The Cardinals outshot the Hawks 12-9 for the game, but New Paltz had a 9-5 advantage in the first half.  New Paltz kept the pressure on the Plattsburgh defense when Heighington kept the game scoreless with a diving save after Santalesa sent a free kick into the box and found Altadonna for the one-timer in the 22nd minute.  Then in the 29th minute, Harrison Lane played a soft touch to Lucas Natel who dribbled down 10 yards and fired a shot just wide of the left post.

In the 35th minute, Plattsburgh struck first off a corner kick by Chris Taylor who found Bogart, who started at back in place of injured All-American Bart Misiak.  A minute later, Greg Wiley played a through-ball to Griffin who beat Tom Viscardi left corner and a 2-0 advantage.

Plattsburgh put the game out of reach in the 62nd minute when Taylor found Brandon Levine for the header and his first goal of the season off another corner kick.

Heighington recorded the win by saving all six of his shots faced in the first half for his fourth career shutout--all coming this season. Viscardi recorded the loss in net, saving three shots on the afternoon.

Cardinals Battle to 0-0 Tie at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Despite missing half of its starting back line, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team played valiantly on Friday and held host Oneonta off the scoreboard in a 0-0 draw at Red Dragon Field. The Cardinals now stand at 8-2-2 overall, including 3-1-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, while the Red Dragons sport records of 8-3-1 and 3-2-1 in the conference.

The Cardinals defense did its job by limiting Oneonta to just two shots on goal and eight total.  Jonathan Korn of the Red Dragons was the busiest of the two goalkeepers, stopping eight shots.  Plattsburgh freshman Andy Heighington made two saves for his third career shutout.

Plattsburgh had the best chances to win in the two overtime periods, outshooting Oneonta 4-2 for the last 20 minutes.

Plattsburgh also won the shootout 8-7, which is used as a year-end tiebreaker between the teams to determine seedings for the SUNYAC Tournament.  The Cardinals converted all eight penalty-kick attempts, including John Martin's last shot to end the last round that came after Heighington made a save off the foot of Larry Pestana.

Cardinals Gut Out Win against Defending Conference Champion Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (By Steven Figliozzi, SID Intern) -- Junior defender John LoGuirato headed home the tie-breaking goal past a diving goalkeeper in the second half to give the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team a 2-1 victory Saturday over visiting Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at the Cardinals Field House Complex.

Unbeaten in the last eight meetings (7-0-1) since 2002, Plattsburgh drew even against Cortland to 14-14-3 since 1985. The Cardinals also improved to 8-2-1 overall, including 3-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons drop to 2-7-1 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Red Dragons were the first to strike in the 21st minute when Steve Bartkowski kicked a shot past Plattsburgh freshman goalie Andy Heighington. The Cardinals answered with a goal of their own two minutes later when Anis Makaren scored after Red Dragon goalie Steve Axtell failed to control a bouncing ball in front of the net. Makaren's goal, his seventh on the season, makes him the team's leading point-scorer--along with Chris Taylor--at 16 points.

That set the stage for LoGuirato's game-winning goal in the 59th minute when the Cardinals struck again when Taylor, the team captain, sent a corner kick into the box for a wide-open LoGuirato, hitting him in stride.

A total of six yellow cards, three for each side, were given out by the officials, who called Cortland for 17 fouls and Plattsburgh, 16.

Heighington improved his season record to 8-2 after facing just five shots.  Axtell made four saves while seeing 12 shots.

The Cardinals have five days off before heading to Oneonta for an Oct. 9 game at 4 p.m.

Plattsburgh Stunned in OT by Visiting Oswego

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Felipe Cavalcanti scored two goals, including the game winner with 2 minutes and 13 seconds left in double overtime, to lift the Oswego men's soccer team to a 2-1 sudden-victory Friday over host Plattsburgh State in State University of New York Athletic Conference play at the Cardinals Field House Complex. The Lakers improve to 2-6 on the year, including 1-1 in the SUNYAC.  The Cardinals (7-2-1, 2-1) saw their seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Plattsburgh got the equalizer in the 70th minute when Matt Hamilton converted a Greg Wiley pass for his fifth goal of the season.

Oswego made good on its only shot of the first half in the 13th minute when German Collazo crossed a ball into the box where Cavalcanti headed home his first goal of the game.

It was a frustrating loss--only their fourth in the last 57 home games since 2004--for the Cardinals, who dominated territorial play, shots (16-3) and corner kicks (9-0). Plattsburgh also tried to sneak past the Oswego back line, but was whistled for four offsides calls.

Plattsburgh had a chance to win the game in the opening minutes of the second overtime as Brandon Levine and Pat Shaughnessy had solid looks at the goal, but Matt Wopperer made back-to-back saves.  The Oswego goalkeeper ended up with six saves.

Plattsburgh's Andy Heighington (1 save) came off his line to try to clear away a deflected ball that Cavalcanti chased down and he beat the goalkeeper before kicking it into an empty net.

Cardinals Win Again at Geneseo on Taylor Free Kick

GENESEO, N.Y. - Chris Taylor continued his hot streak on Saturday afternoon by scoring on a direct free kick with 6 minutes and 33 seconds left in the second overtime, lifting visiting Plattsburgh State to a 1-0 sudden-victory over Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer action.  The Cardinals are 7-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC after extending a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1). The Blue Knights, meanwhile, fall to 4-3-1, including 1-1 in the conference.

Taylor scored his fourth goal of the season from 35 yards out and through traffic.  The current SUNYAC and ECAC Upstate Player of the Week has four goals and four assists for 12 points in his last four outings.

Freshman goalkeeper Andy Heighington made a career-high five saves to earn his seventh win and second shutout of the season.  His counterpart Mike Madarasz had two stops.

Geneseo outshot Plattsburgh by a 2-to-1 ratio, 12-6 for the game.  But the Cardinals had the only two shots--both on goal--in the overtime sessions.

Cardinals Ground Golden Eagles in SUNYAC Opener on the Road

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team kicked off its State University of New York Athletic Conference opener in style on Friday with a 4-1 victory at Brockport, extending the Cardinals' road win streak to four games.  Plattsburgh also ran its unbeaten streak to six games overall to improve to 6-1-1 on the season, while the host Golden Eagles are now 2-3-2 (0-1 SUNYAC).

Anis Makaren led the Plattsburgh offense with a goal and an assist, and reigning SUNYAC and ECAC Upstate Player of the Week Chris Taylor added a pair of assists.

Brockport scored its only goal in the 50th minute when goalkeeper Joe Marino punted the ball from his own box downfield as his counterpart mishandled it and crossed the goal line.  That came 4 minutes and 18 seconds after Danny Byrnes scored his first goal of the season to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead just 38 seconds into the second half.

Plattsburgh put the game away with 15 minutes to go as Anis Makaren and Mike Payne scored 53 seconds apart to make it a three-goal cushion.  It was Makaren's team-high sixth goal of the year, and Payne's first of his career.

Andy Heighington made three saves to earn the win while Marino ended up with nine.

The Cardinals also held advantages in shots (16 to 9) and corner kicks (8-6).

Chris Taylor Tabbed Co-Offensive Player of the Week for ECAC Upstate

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Following the State University of New York Athletic Conference's announcement yesterday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference has followed suit and named Plattsburgh State junior forward Chris Taylor as its ECAC Upstate men's soccer co-offensive player of the week, for the period ending Sunday.

Taylor, of Liverpool, England (Cardinal Heenan High School), figured prominently in two non-conference wins last week, scoring a team-leading eight points to become Plattsburgh's pacesetter for the season. He was credited with a game-winning goal struck from 25 yards out at Castleton State on Wednesday, and assisted on the insurance tally in a 3-1 triumph. He also drilled a 35-yard shot for his second goal of the Skidmore game for the game winner in the 69th minute on Saturday, capping a 3-2 comeback victory in which Plattsburgh trailed 2-0 after 10 minutes.

Taylor now leads the team with six assists and 12 points.  As the first SUNYAC player to be recognized by the ECAC this season, he shares the regional weekly award with Brian Bianchetti of Vassar College.

Chris Taylor Chosen for SUNYAC Player of the Week Honors

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State junior forward Chris Taylor has been named the men's soccer player of the week by the State University of New York Athletic Conference on Monday, for the period ending Sunday.  A first-time recipient of the award, he succeeds teammate Anis Makaren who received similar SUNYAC accolades on Sept. 14.

Cardinals Storm Back to Edge Skidmore, 3-2

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals on Saturday to surge past visiting Skidmore 3-2 at the Field House Soccer Complex.  Plattsburgh improves to 5-1-1 overall while Skidmore evens its record to 3-3.

The Thoroughbreds jumped out to an early two goal lead on tallies by Taylor Alderson in the 11th minute and a Doug Yeates' penalty kick in the 16th.

Freshman forward Matt Hamilton started the Cardinal comeback in the 35th minute, receiving a pass from Chris Taylor and striking one past goalkeeper Nick Peterson.

Plattsburgh came out in the second half with great intensity scoring in the 66th minute, when senior Mike Pinamonti crossed a ball over to Taylor who buried one in the back of the net from the right side. Three minutes later, he tacked on his second goal, a game winner, of the night by blasting the ball from 25 yards outside the box into the right lower corner.

Despite falling behind early, Plattsburgh ended up outshooting its opponent 15 to 4 and took 10 more corner kicks for the game. Freshman goalie Andy Heighington picked up a team-high fifth win on the season.

The Cardinals will try to add to a four-game winning streak next Friday when they travel to Brockport to begin State University of New York Athletic Conference play.

Cardinals Win Again on the Road at Castleton State

CASTLETON, Vt. - Chris Taylor and Pat Shaughnessy scored 1 minute and 37 seconds apart in the second half to lift the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory Wednesday over Castleton State at Spartan Stadium.  The Cardinals picked up their third straight road win and extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) to move to 4-1-1 overall.  The Spartans (3-3), who are favored to win the North Atlantic Conference title, lost for the first time on their new home field turf.

Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Gurtej Dhillon collected a misplayed clear and lofted a pass from 35 yards out into John LoGuirato, who headed the ball past goalie Mike Anthony.

Castleton got the equalizer in the 48th as Billy Lund notched his first collegiate goal when he eluded a pair of Cardinal defenders, faked left and struck a knuckling shot over goalkeeper Andy Heighington.

Taylor's go-ahead goal was struck with pace from 25 yards into the top-left corner.  Shaughnessy's insurance tally came via a Taylor corner kick into the penalty area where Anis Makaren headed a pass to the open goalscorer.

The Cardinals dominated shots (21-5) for the game, including 17 to 1 in the first half.  Anthony made four saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep Castleton in the game.

Bart Misiak led a stout Plattsburgh defense by singlehandedly thwarting many offensive surges from the Spartans.

Makaren Picks Up SUNYAC Player of the Week Honor

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State's Anis Makaren has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer player of the week for the period ending Sunday, the league office announced on Tuesday.  The junior forward from Lecheria, Venezuela (SUNY-Delhi), is the first Cardinal to be chosen this season.

Makaren helped Plattsburgh to a pair of road wins against regional opponents last week. Both of his goals put Plattsburgh in the lead, including an eventual game-winner over Clarkson in a 3-1 triumph Wednesday. He also scored in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Saint John Fisher.

The newcomer who was an all-region player at the junior college level leads the team in scoring with five goals.

Plattsburgh looks to keep its three-game unbeaten streak alive on Wednesday at Castleton State and then Saturday at home versus Skidmore.  Both games are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

Visiting Plattsburgh Wins Battle of Cardinals in Regional Contest

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team chalked up its second straight in-region road win on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium, defeating Saint John Fisher College 2-1 in a non-conference battle of the Cardinals.  Plattsburgh--unbeaten in its last three starts--improves to 3-1-1 on the season while Fisher falls to 1-2-1 after losing in its home opener.

All the scoring was done in the first half as Plattsburgh built a 2-0 lead.  Anis Makaren scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 12th minute off a rebound of his own shot, completing a three-shot barrage in which Fisher keeper Adam Durst saved the first two attempts.  Pat Shaughnessy added the eventual game-winner, his first goal of the season, in the 27th minute when Chris Taylor sent a direct free kick across the middle of the box to be tapped past Durst.

Fisher capitalized on a foul opportunity later in the half to cut the deficit in half, as Andrew McIntosh sent a free kick to Luke Lennox for a header into the upper right-hand corner. That goal and assist combination served as Lennox's second tally of the year and McIntosh's first assist.

Makaren had a chance to give Plattsburgh some insurance in the 53rd minute, but his header shot clanked off the crossbar.

Plattsburgh pressured the Fisher defense with 14 shots, five corner kicks and five offside infractions.  Durst ended up with seven saves while his counterpart Andy Heighington had three stops for his third career win.

Fisher had a pair of scoring chances to tie it with under 2 minutes left, but Heighington saved shots attempted by Ryan Palmer and Matt Giunto.

Second-Half Surge Lifts Cardinals to Victory on the Road

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The visiting Plattsburgh State men's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie in the second half on a go-ahead goal by Anis Makaren and Matt Hamilton added an insurance tally to defeat Clarkson, 3-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday.  The Cardinals improve to 2-1-1 while snapping the Golden Knights three-game win streak to drop them 3-1.

Clarkson took a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest as Nate Hazen shot a direct free kick from approximately 35 yards out and placed it neatly in the top-left corner of the goal over the hands of Plattsburgh goalie Andy Heighington. It was the first goal for the Knights against Plattsburgh since 2002, a span of 536 minutes and 49 seconds.

Hamilton tied it at 1-all when he took a crossing pass from Chris Taylor and headed the ball into the back of the net, starting his first career multi-goal game.  The teams went into the locker room tied 1-1.

Plattsburgh finished with a 15-10 edge in shots and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks. Heighington had four saves in the win while Saverino Spagnolo made three saves for Clarkson.

Makaren Scores Twice as Cardinals Settle for 2-2 Draw

CORAM, N.Y. - Anis Makaren scored twice, and Pat Shaughnessy added two assists, as the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with Saint Joseph's (Maine) in Sunday's third-place match at the Saint Joseph's College-Long Island Tournament.  Both teams are now 1-1-1 on the season.

Chris Taylor was also credited with an assist on Makaren's first tally of the game, which gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead just 5 minutes and 8 seconds after the opening kickoff.

David Hickman and Taylor represented Plattsburgh on the all-tournament team.

Plattsburgh enjoyed a 2-1 advantage until the Monks scored a late goal with 2 minutes left in regulation--an unassisted goal by Jesse West.  The Cardinals, who applied offensive pressure for the entire game with a 22-6 shots advantage--also carried play in the two overtime sessions, 6-1.

Mike Lind played in goal for Plattsburgh, making two saves.  His counterpart Will Pike had 11 stops.

The game was very physical as the two teams combined for 28 fouls and seven yellow cautions (Plattsburgh 4).

The Monks claimed third-place by virtue of winning the penalty-kick shootout, 4-2, but the result officially goes into the books as a tie.

Cardinals Edged by Merchant Marine on Neutral Field

CORAM, N.Y. - Rusty Denson's goal in the 68th minute broke a 1-1 deadlock and gave Merchant Marine a 2-1 non-conference victory Saturday over Plattsburgh State in the first round of the Saint Joseph's-Long Island men's soccer tournament.  Both teams are now 1-1.

In other action today, the host Golden Eagles defeated Saint Joseph's (Maine) 3-2.  Sunday's schedule is set as Plattsburgh will play Saint Joseph's (Maine) for third place at noon, followed by SJLI against USMMA in the championship game at 2 p.m.

Lane Gould gave Merchant Marine a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute until Plattsburgh got the equalizer on Greg Wiley's first career goal in a red and white uniform in the 65th.  Chris Taylor and John LoGuirato were credited with assists on Wiley's header from inside the 6-yard box.

But 2 minutes and 33 seconds after Plattsburgh tied it 1-all, USMMA took its second lead of the game and hung on for its first win of the season.

New-Look Cardinals Shut Down Norwich in Season Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team scored two second-half goals and employed a suffocating defense en route to a 2-0 non-conference victory Tuesday over visiting Norwich at the Field House Soccer Complex.  It was the season opener for both teams.  The Cardinals improve to 11-2 against the Cadets during Chris Waterbury's 25-year coaching tenure, but they were avenging a 3-1 loss in Northfield, Vt., last season when Plattsburgh entered the game as a Top 25 squad.

The teams played a scoreless first half, but Plattsburgh held a dominating territorial advantage.  Back Mike Pinamonti broke through in the 52nd minute with a 35-yard shot that curled inside the right post from the left side of the field.  Then 7 minutes later, junior college transfer Anis Makaren scored his first goal in a Plattsburgh uniform on assists by Pat Shaughnessy and Danny Byrnes.  David Hickman was also credited with an assist on Pinamonti's tally.

Plattsburgh had 18 shots for the game, including nine on goal.  Norwich didn't have a shot until the 85th minute off the foot of Jake Yaris.

Charles Maxwell registered seven saves for the Cadets, while freshman Andy Heighington earned his first career shutout in his collegiate debut for the Cardinals.

Twenty newcomers--15 freshmen--dot Plattsburgh's 31-man roster in 2009.
