Cardinals Advance to SUNYAC Title Game
ONEONTA, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State registered a 1-0 victory--its NCAA-leading 17th shutout of the season--over Geneseo on Friday afternoon to advance to the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. The second-seeded Cardinals (14-2-3) will face top-seed Fredonia, which beat Cortland 1-0 in today's other semifinal, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame Fields; the winner receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
(Following story courtesy of The Press-Republican) Strong defensive play has carried the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team this season. It was no different Friday afternoon.
Chris Mitchell's first-half goal was all the scoring in the Cardinals' 1-0 win versus the Knights.
It was a hard-fought, physical, up-and-down game between the Cardinals and Knights were both had their share of chances.
"It was a very difficult game for us," said Plattsburgh State head coach Chris Waterbury. "I've never seen Geneseo so dangerous on direct kicks, something that we are good at defending.
"We had our chances to score, but so did they. It was just a war out there. I was expecting it to be a low-scoring game."
Plattsburgh State recorded its school-record 17th shutout of the season and the defense, led by keeper John San Filippo, was the difference yet another time.
"John was absolutely fabulous," Waterbury said. "Once again, he did a great job coming out of his net.
"But, it's hard to pick out one or two players on our defense. Everyone did a great job keeping our defensive shape, which includes covering up for one another."
The Cardinals applied early pressure, but San Filippo was called upon to make a key stop following a Geneseo corner kick with 10 minutes gone in the contest.
It didn't take long for the Cardinals to break through after that.
A ball was sent in to John LoGuirato, who headed it to Mitchell, who chipped it into the corner to put Plattsburgh State in front to stay at the 12:58 mark.
"We were able to score a great goal," Waterbury said. "There was a good build-up leading up to the goal."
With nearly 17 minutes gone in the half, however, San Filippo preserved the lead when he made the save of the game -- tipping a Geneseo header over the net.
Both teams came close in the second half.
The Cardinals sent a shot off the post with 22 minutes remaining and San Filippo made a diving stop to his left to turn back a hard shot from just outside the box with 3:30 left in regulation.
"Geneseo pressured us right up to the end of the game," Waterbury said. "But, our guys were resilient."
The Cardinals held an 11-10 advantage in shots and Geneseo a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
San Filippo was credited with three saves -- all huge ones -- while Mike Madarasz made four stops for the Knights (11-7-2).
LoGuirato, who assisted on Mitchell's game-winner, played a strong game up front for the Cardinals.
"LoGuirato was exhausted after the game," Waterbury said. "A lot of our guys were exhausted."
The Cardinals have surrendered just four goals all season in 19 games. They have been score on in only two of the 19 contests.
Peter Dagel scored in the final minute of regulation following a misplay by the Cortland keeper to give Fredonia its semifinal victory.
The Blue Devils and Cardinals played to a scoreless overtime tie during the regular season in a game held in Plattsburgh.

The visiting Cardinals now stand 12-2-3 overall while the Saints are 8-2-5.

Plattsburgh held a slim advantage in shots, 14-12, and corner kicks, 6-5. But it was the Saints' Charlie Bogosian who had the best scoring chance in the 39th minute when he went one-on-one with San Filippo, but the shot just barely deflected off his hand and went wide of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
The Cardinals dictated the offensive pressure in the extra sessions, outshooting their hosts 5-1, but couldn't convert.

Cardinals Make School History in Scoreless Tie
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Visiting Buffalo State and Plattsburgh State managed a double-overtime 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer action at the Cardinals Fieldhouse Complex. The Bengals now stand 8-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in SUNYAC while the Cardinals--who extended their home unbeaten streak to 27 games (24-0-3)--are 10-2-2 and 5-2-2.
It marked the first time in the 57-year program of back-to-back scoreless games for the Cardinals, who played Fredonia to a 0-0 draw here yesterday. Minutes before Twichell's heroics, Daniel Webster's Kiernan Thorne had an excellent scoring chance on a free kick 25-yards out but the shot just grazed the outside of the far post.
