Cardinals' 19-Game SUNYAC Unbeaten Streak Snapped by Oswego
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Eric Selleck scored two goals and had an assist and Jon Whitelaw also scored twice to power No. 8-ranked Oswego to a 5-2 men's hockey victory Saturday over No. 1 Plattsburgh State at the Stafford Ice Arena. The Lakers (5-1 overall) remain perfect in the State University of New York Athletic Conference at 4-0. The Cardinals lose for the first time in four games this season--all in SUNYAC play--and see their 19-game conference unbeaten streak come to an end.
Chris Laganiere put Oswego up for good at 3-2 with two-tenths of a second remaining in the second period. He roofed his fifth goal of the season from inside the left-circle. He also added two assists.
Trailing 2-0 in the middle stanza, Plattsburgh tied the game on goals by Kyle Kudroch and Vick Schlueter. Phil Farrow and Andrew Willock assisted on Kudroch's second tally.
Kyle Gunn-Taylor made Third Star of the Game honors with 32 saves for the Lakers, who were outshot by 20 for the game. Plattsburgh had an 18-3 margin in the second period.
Oswego went 2-for-6 on the power play while Plattsburgh had a goal on six man-advantages.
Plattsburgh last fell in a SUNYAC game on Feb. 15, 2008, in Potsdam, 4-2.

Balanced Cardinals Notch Another SUNYAC Win
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team used five different scorers en route to a decisive 5-1 victory Friday over visiting Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game at the Stafford Ice Arena. The top-ranked Cardinals improve to 3-0 both overall and in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons drop to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
With Plattsburgh up 1-0 in the second period, Kyle Kudroch took a pass from Kyle VanderMale after 1 minute and 32 seconds gone to score what proved to be the game-winning goal, his first of the season. Eric Satim made it 3-0 just 16 seconds later on a feed by Matty MacLeod.
The Red Dragons cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 12:36 mark of the second period when Patrick Palmisano scored his fifth of the season. Jake Saville was credited with an assist.
Chris Wieland, Vick Schlueter and Patrick Jobb also scored for the Cardinals, who outshot the Red Dragons 34-20.
Ryan Williams (2-0) made 19 saves in the win while his Cortland counterpart Doug Danzi had 29.
After three games, 10 players have accounted for 13 Cardinal goals and 17 scorers have at least one point.

Balanced Offense Leads Cardinals Past Golden Eagles
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State received balanced scoring as four different Cardinals earned their first goals of the season in a 4-1 victory Saturday against visiting College at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey action before 1,763 at the Stafford Ice Arena. The top-ranked Cardinals extended their SUNYAC unbeaten streak to 18 games in a row (17-0-1) dating to the 2007-08 campaign, improving 2-0 overall and in SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles drop to 0-2 overall and in the conference.
After the teams battled to a scoreless first period despite Plattsburgh outshooting Brockport 16-7, Phil Farrow put the Cardinals on the scoreboard 1 minute and 11 seconds gone in the second with a power play goal. The Golden Eagles got a power play goal of their own at the 15:19 mark as former Cardinal Jason Gorrie scored his first of the year on assists by Ryan Silveira and Chris Berardini.
The Cardinals put the game away in the third period with three goals by freshmen Matt Bessing at 5:47, Patrick Jobb at 12:34 and junior Kyle VanderMale at 16:34. Jobb assisted on Bessing's first career collegiate tally and defensemen Tom Breslin assisted on the last two goals.

Top-Ranked Plattsburgh Edges Geneseo in SUNYAC Opener for Both Teams
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The No. 1-ranked Plattsburgh State men's hockey team began its two-time title defense with a 4-2 victory Friday over Geneseo at Stafford Ice Arena in the State University of New York Athletic Conference opener for both schools. The Cardinals (1-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) used late third-period goals by Andrew Willock and Eric Satim 17 seconds apart to break a 2-2 deadlock, staying undefeated in conference play in 17 straight games (16-0-1).
Phil Rose put the visitors up 1-0 just 2 minutes and 48 seconds after the opening face-off, scoring his first goal of the season.
Freshman Chris Wieland evened it at 1-all by scoring his first career collegiate goal with 12 seconds left in the first period.
Like the first, the teams traded goals in the second stanza when Dylan Clarke netted his first of the season just 33 seconds in for a 2-1 Plattsburgh lead before Danny Scagnelli tied it 6:03 later.
That set the stage for Willock's eventual game-winner. After Geneseo's Jake Yard was whistled for a 2-minute tripping penalty, Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery called for a timeout with 4:45 to go in the game. The Cardinals worked a set play as defenseman Mike Kavanagh found an open Willock for the go-ahead goal on the power-play.
Plattsburgh outshot Geneseo 32 to 23, including 16-8 in the middle period.
Cory Gershon kept the Knights (0-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) in it by making 28 saves. Josh Leis, a freshman, made his first career start in net for the Cardinals, stopping 21 shots. He prevented the Knights from taking a 3-2 lead late in the second period, stopping Sebastian Panetta's breakaway shot while the Cardinals were on the power-play. Panetta was so frustrated by Leis' glove save that he broke his stick over the goal and earned a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey coaches Wednesday have voted Plattsburgh State to repeat as conference champions in 2009-10, according to balloting by the league's nine head coaches. The Cardinals, who were also anointed for the top spot in the NCAA Division III poll by USCHO.com a day earlier, received 71 points--including seven first-place votes--to edge second-place Oswego (66, 2).
The rest of the SUNYAC coaches' poll has 3. Geneseo, 56; 4. Potsdam, 47; 5. Fredonia, 45; 6. Buffalo State, 34; 7. Brockport, 31; 8. Cortland, 26; and 9. Morrisville, 20 (ineligible for SUNYAC/NCAA postseason play).
Plattsburgh has captured the last two SUNYAC championships as part of a conference-record 19 titles. The Cardinals return 15 players off last year's squad that went 24-2-2 overall, 15-0-1 in SUNYAC to set a school record for conference wins and to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, including all-conference first team juniors Dylan Clarke, an All-America forward, and Ryan Corry, a high-scoring defenseman.

Cardinals are Preseason #1 in NCAA Division III Men's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS - The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team will start the 2009-10 season where it finished last year: ranked No. 1 in the nation by USCHO.com. The Cardinals received five first-place votes and a total of 253 points to edge defending NCAA Division III champion Neumann (9 first-place votes, 245) by eight points. Click Here for Complete USCHO.com NCAA Division III Top 15 Poll
Including last season in which it spent the last 14 weeks atop the national rankings, Plattsburgh has extended a school record of 15 consecutive weeks at No. 1 in the NCAA Division III poll of 15 coaches and five media members.
Voters apparently were not phased by the fact that Plattsburgh lost a combined 77 percent of its offensive points off last year's squad that went 24-2-2 overall, 15-0-1 in SUNYAC to set a school record for conference wins and captured State University of New York Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
The Cardinals, however, do return a solid core of veterans and have a talented recruiting class of 13 freshmen to stay competitive. The list of returnees starts with All-America junior forward Dylan Clarke who racked up career highs of 23 assists and 39 points to earn All-SUNYAC First Team honors in 2009. Also returning on offense is Phil Farrow who had all-conference-type numbers of 12 goals and 26 assists for 38 points--all career highs. Other scorers in double digits include Eric Satim (11+18=29), Ryan Corry (5+21=26), Kyle Kudroch (10+5=15), Andrew Willock (6+8=14), Dan Sliasis (4+10=14), Kyle Taylor (6+5=11), Vick Schlueter (5+5=10) and Mike Kavanagh (4+6=10).
Corry, who made the all-SUNYAC first team as a sophomore, is the team’s top returning defenseman. One of the top-scoring blueliners in the nation, he also helped a stingy Plattsburgh defense that ranked No. 1 in SUNYAC and was third in Division III scoring defense at 1.93 per game and also allowed 54 goals for the fewest in team history a year ago.
Coach Bob Emery, who is in his 21st year at the helm, will be piloting a young squad of 20 freshmen and sophomores that seeks a third-straight SUNYAC championship and 20th overall, as well as the program’s NCAA-record 18th Division III Tournament berth.
Plattsburgh opens the new season in earnest this weekend hosting SUNYAC opponents Geneseo and Brockport on Friday and Saturday, both games starting at 7 p.m. in Stafford Ice Arena.

Cardinals Sting Concordia University in Exhibition
PLATTSBURGH - The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team opened the 2009-10 season unofficially with a 7-2 exhibition victory Saturday over Concordia University of Montreal before 1,575 fans at the Stafford Ice Arena. Freshman Chris Wieland scored midway through the second period to break a 2-2 deadlock and the Cardinals' offense exploded for four more goals in the third period.
The Cardinals will take to the ice for real the weekend of Oct. 30-31 when conference opponents Geneseo and Brockport come to town. The Stingers, who are members of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport-affiliated Quebec Student Sports Federation Conference, fall to 0-6. Per NCAA rules, statistics and results of this meeting do not count against the Cardinals' record.
Dylan Clarke led Plattsburgh with two goals, including his first of the night with 50 seconds left in the opening period for a 2-0 lead.
The Stingers fought back to tie it at 2-all on goals by Michael Blundon and Jesse Goodsell in the second period. But 25 seconds after Goodsell's tally, the Cardinals answered quickly with Wieland's eventual game-winner.
Other Plattsburgh multi-point scorers were Eric Satim with three points on a goal and two assists, and Jared Docking and Paul Puglisi each had two assists.
The Cardinals dominated in shots, 45 to 16.
Plattsburgh utilized three freshman goaltenders in Josh Leis (5 saves), Raphy Rossy (3; credited with win) and Ryan Williams (6). In the Concordia-Montreal net, Maxime Joyal and Roger Kennedy had 24 and 14 saves, respectively.

She is doing this by creating awareness and calling attention to the tremendous capabilities of people with disabilities. "The college hockey community has lost a great, caring individual who loved life. He will be missed," Bruce Delventhal, athletics director at Plattsburgh State, said. "On behalf of our athletic department, our thoughts and prayers go out to Herb's wife, Patti, and the family."
Hammond coached the Cardinals for two seasons from 1981-82, compiling a 52-17-4 record for a .740 winning percentage. He piloted the program to a pair of NCAA Division II championship game appearances and the 1982 State University of New York Athletic Conference co-title. He was named the 1981 Division III Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association after the Cardinals went 27-4-2.
Before arriving in Plattsburgh, Hammond led Oswego to a 176-122-5 mark from 1969 to 1980.
Hammond also served as the head coach at Division I Brown from 1983 to 1988. His 20-year NCAA coaching record is 264-253-12.
Hammond then left coaching to become a scout in the National Hockey League for 11 seasons, helping the New York Rangers capture the 1994 Stanley Cup for the first time in over 50 years. He retired in 2000.
Effective during the 2008-09 campaign, the SUNYAC player of the year award was renamed the Herb Hammond Most Valuable Player of the Year Award, recognizing the contributions of one of the pioneers of the conference's most popular sport among fans. Plattsburgh sophomore goaltender Bryan Hince was the first recipient.
Coach's Corner
Coach Bob Emery:
"The best thing about this program is working toward and meeting the challenge of high expectations. Winning has been fun in the past, but what happens is that you establish your own high-water mark. With that comes high expectations on an annual level, from the team, the coaches and the fans. Historically, we've been able to meet those expectations.
"All our returning players know what is expected of them and of the program. When you talk about our top guys, they realize that if they don't meet expectations they won't have fun. To do that, they have to enjoy the game first. All of our freshman must be prepared to make an immediate impact. There is an adjustment to college hockey, some guys make it faster not necessarily even the best players but all players have to work hard to raise their level of play to where we are."
A Traditional National Power
Success at the highest level is expected in Cardinal Country. The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team's tradition of success is well documented and well known throughout the hockey world. The team has competed in the NCAA Tournament 16 times since the team started in 1975, advanced to the Final Four 12 times and won two National Championships (1992, 2001).
Individually, Plattsburgh boasts 18 All-Americans, with six of those student-athletes earning All-America honors two times. After finishing their collegiate careers, many Cardinal Hockey players use their experience garnered at Plattsburgh State to play professional hockey, evidenced by over 50 former Cardinals that have played or are currently playing professional hockey.
The Cardinals play in the 3,500-seat Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, one of the finest facilities for NCAA College Division Hockey in the Nation. The Stafford Arena has been host to three NCAA Championships, international exhibitions, and was originally used for the World University Games. The Cardinals regularly draw over 2,000 fans per game, including 10 record-setting attendance marks over 3,500, and the team has led the nation in total attendance six times since 1996.
The team competes in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), and the conference champion gains automatic entry into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The men's ice hockey team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and community service.
