Plattsburgh State opens season with victory over St. Joseph's

The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season in impressive fashion with a 59-48 victory over St. Joseph's (ME) College in the opening round of the 21st Cardinal Classic Friday at Memorial Hall Gym at Plattsburgh.

Curtis Smith led four Cardinals (1-0) into double figures with 18 points.  Cam Arterberry added 12 points while Johnnie Carter and Calvin Fraser each chipped in 10 points.

Fraser grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds and Arterberry added 12.

Plattsburgh jumped out to a 10-point lead at halftime but St. Joesph's (0-1) climbed back into the game coming as closes as four points at 44-40 with 6:37 left in the game.

Arterberry converted a dunk and then a 12-foot jumper to give the Cardinals back its 8-point lead.

Fraser sealed the victory with a layup at the 2:41 mark and a jumper in the final 37 seconds.

Both teams struggled shooting from the field with Plattsburgh hitting just 38 percent and St. Joe's connecting on 36%.  Each team was just 1-of-11 from beyond the three-point line.

Plattsburgh will play Middlebury in the championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Middlebury edged Mt. St. Mary College 81-79 in the first game of the tournament.
