You spoke. We listened.
After a two-year break from the tradition, Homecoming is returning to its October home.
The college took a different track with this longtime SUNY Plattsburgh tradition in 2010 and 2011, pairing Homecoming with Family Weekend, held earlier in the fall.
“But alumni have spoken. I’ve had conversations with alumni all over the country on my visits, and they truly want us to return to their beloved tradition of an October Homecoming weekend,” said Joanne Nelson, director of alumni relations.
Homecoming 2012 will be held Oct. 19-21 and include the Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame induction, departmental open houses, campus tours and opportunities to explore all the North Country has to offer in the fall.
Homecoming in the fall and Reunion in the summer will stand as the two biggest gatherings of the year for alumni.
“People have a special place in their hearts for their college home. It’s the reason people want to come back,” Nelson said. “Every year you have two wonderful chances to nurture that place in your heart by returning.”
Reunion brings together classes for milestone anniversaries every five years. This year’s event, July 12-15, honors class years ending in 2 and 7 and all “golden” classes of alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago.
Homecoming is meant for all alumni to come back and see their campus at its best — brimming with students and activity.
“Homecoming is about remembering — the places, the friends — some of whom become family forever. Homecoming connects alumni to this special place, their campus home.”
Nelson hinted at new plans for that weekend.
“We hope to create new traditions with Homecoming,” Nelson said. “But we want our alumni to know the college they knew is still here. We’ll always be here and will always hope to be connected with alumni somehow.”
