Journalism Alumni Panel Career Talk

Alumni Jessica Bakeman '11, Michelle Besaw '08 and Shannon MacCue '03 will discuss their careers and how they put their journalism degrees to use. They will also give practical advice on preparing for a career in the field.

Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation to be Exhibited

Time: 9:00 a.m.to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Burke Gallery, Meyers Fine Arts Building
Cost: Free

In a rare public exhibit, one of the nation's greatest documentary treasures - President Abraham Lincoln's Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation - will be on display at the Plattsburgh State Art Museum, SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday, October 19, 2012.

The actual draft document, written in Abraham Lincoln's own hand with edits from his Secretary of State William Seward, a former governor of New York will be on display along with the Emancipation Proclamation Centennial Commemoration Speech by Dr. Martin Luther King.

Lincoln read the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation to his cabinet on September 22, 1862 and told them that he would accept minor changes in wording. Seward, a lifelong abolitionist, wrote in certain additions. Except for these revisions, and the formal beginning and ending written by the chief clerk, the document is otherwise entirely in Lincoln's hand. All are welcome.

ODK Alumni Breakfast Event

Time: 9-10 a.m.
Location: Flynt Commons, Angell College Center

Since 1981, more than 2,000 exceptional men and women have been inducted into the Plattsburgh ODK circle in recognition of scholarship, leadership and service. Come network over breakfast with faculty, staff, students and fellow alumni. A special alumni induction will be held. Join us and see who is tapped for membership.

Alumni Awards Continental Breakfast

The Alumni Association will present two awards: the Off to a Good Start Award and the Faculty Staff Impact Award.

General Admissions Presentation and Enrolled Student Panel

Time: 10 a.m. presentation; 11 a.m. tour of campus
Location: Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall

Group information sessions provide an overview of academics and the admissions process, and include time for questions and answers. Visitors are taken on a student-guided tour of the campus, which includes stops at residence halls, academic buildings, dining facilities, the Fitness Center, the library, and the Angell College Center. Ice Skating With Burghy

Enjoy an open-skate with Burghy, the college mascot. Limited skate rentals – all sizes.

Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame Induction and Luncheon

Time: Noon-2 p.m.    
Location: Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center

Inducted into the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame will be Brian Dodge’76, posthumously, for track and field; Bryan Murray '01 and Niklas Sundberg ’02  for hockey; and the 1975-1976 Men’s Basketball Team. All alumni welcome with advance registration by Oct. 12.

Reviving an old tradition with a new ripple. Vice President Bill Laundry will serve as judge as he floats around the pond in a boat. Cardinal Trail Run

Time: 4 p.m. kids’ run; 4:15 p.m. adults’ run
Location: Field House

5K trail run. Kids run for free; adults $15. All proceeds to benefit cross-country, track and field and women’s soccer teams. First 75 to enter receive a T-shirt. Sponsored by the SUNY Plattsburgh Alumni Association.

Tailgate Tent Party

Time: 5-6:30 p.m.
Location: Front Lawn, Field House

Enjoy the crisp North Country air and a festive fall atmosphere. With your registration fee, you will receive sweet and hot sausages with peppers and onions; coleslaw; cookies; water; chips; and a coupon for a beer or root beer. All must register in advance for this event. Included in the cost of the event is one ticket to the men's hockey exhibition game. Please pick up the ticket at the Tailgate Tent Party.

Bring your ID to purchase additional cold draft beers in the designated beer tent. Alcohol may only be purchased, possessed and consumed within the designated area. Open container laws will be in effect outside of this area and on campus grounds.

Stop by the Hard Hattians tent to design a personalized, complimentary hardhat ($5.00 value) to show your Plattsburgh spirit at the hockey game!

Note: The tailgate tent party is reserved for alumni, faculty, staff and friends of SUNY Plattsburgh. Sorry, no outside food or drink will be permitted.

SUNY Plattsburgh Gospel Choir: Taking It Back Talent Showcase

Time: 8 p.m.
Location: Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center

One of the largest groups on campus performs a selection of energetic and inspiring tunes from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s to finish off the day on the right note. Admission fee will be collected at the door. The fee is $2.00 for students and $5.00 for general admission. However, if you bring a can of food for the Interfaith Food Shelf, there will be a discounted admission fee of $1.00 for students and $3.00 for general admission. A portion of the proceeds go to the North Country Underground Railroad Association and Interfaith Food Shelf.
