How many transfer students enroll each year?
Plattsburgh annually enrolls about 825 transfer students (along with about 1000 freshmen). Of the transfer students, 600 will enroll for the fall semester and 225 for the spring semester.
When should I apply as a transfer student?
SUNY Plattsburgh recommends that students applying for the fall semester apply by March 1. Students applying for the spring semester should apply by November 1.
How do I apply as a transfer student?
Transfer applicants have two options to apply for admission - the Common Application and the SUNY Application. The Admissions Committee does not give preference to either application. Learn more about applying for admission to SUNY Plattsburgh.
What address should I use when mailing my official transcripts?
Your official transcript(s) should be forwarded directly to:
Admissions
SUNY Plattsburgh
101 Broad Street
Plattsburgh, NY 12901
When do I receive my admissions decision as a transfer applicant?
Admissions decisions are based on your completed application and official transcript(s). For the fall semester, acceptance packets are mailed on January 15 and continue on a rolling basis until we close admission (usually mid-summer). For the spring semester, acceptance packets are mailed beginning November 1 and continue on a rolling basis until admission closes in January.
Are interviews required for transfer applicants?
Interviews are not required for admission, but they are strongly encouraged. A visit is one of the best ways to learn about the opportunities available at SUNY Plattsburgh. Often, transfer students have questions about their credit evaluation and their majors. Some students also schedule visits with the chairpersons of their academic departments.
What Grade Point Average do I need for admission?
A minimum GPA of 2.30 is recommended for admission to most of SUNY Plattsburgh's academic programs. However, some programs require a higher GPA, such as the following:
2.75 GPA - Combined BA/MST Adolescence Education Programs, Combined BS/MSED Childhood/Special Education Program, and Childhood Education
2.50 GPA - Communication Disorders and Sciences, Social Work, and Fitness & Wellness Leadership
Please note: Admission to the Nursing program is competitive and priority is given to applicants with the highest GPA and the most number of prerequisites completed.
How many credits do I need to complete to transfer?
SUNY Plattsburgh does not require a minimum number of credits to be considered for admission. However, to be based on the merits of your college coursework alone, you must have competed approximately 24-30 credits at the time of admission. Students who apply with fewer than 24 credits completed will need to submit high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores.
Will my credits transfer? What is the maximum number of credits that can transfer?
If you are transferring from an accredited college, you should not have trouble transferring your college credits. However, we do not transfer credit from technical subjects, like automotive repair, construction technology, or secretarial courses. Once a transfer course is accepted, the course is placed based upon its content, its level, and if it has the appropriate prerequisites. Credit evaluations are completed during the admissions process. Plattsburgh will accept 67 credits from a two-year college and 84 credits from a four-year college.

Can I have my credits evaluated before I pay my admissions deposit?
You can request to have your transcripts evaluated at any time by calling the Admissions Office toll-free at (888) 673-0012. We encourage you to set up an appointment to get the best possible information. We will need the transcripts from all the colleges you have attended.
Will I get the courses I need?
SUNY Plattsburgh guarantees that new transfer students who wish to go full-time will be able to do so with courses that are applicable towards their degree requirements. Once we know that you plan to enroll as a transfer (usually by the receipt of your admissions deposit), you will be forwarded instructions on how to register for courses.
What scholarships are available for transfer students?
SUNY Plattsburgh transfer scholarships are available to students who are transferring from a regionally accredited college or university and have completed a minimum of 15 credits at the time the application is submitted. For more information, please visit our scholarship calculator.

Are there specific residence halls for transfer students?
No, we do not have residence halls specifically for transfer students. Instead, transfer students are generally placed with another transfer student or a current SUNY Plattsburgh student of sophomore-level or higher standing. We do not generally place transfer students in freshman housing.
