Each year, SUNY Plattsburgh evaluates credits for approximately 1,000 transfer students who have been accepted for admission. The evaluation process involves a careful review of a student's academic record to determine if individual courses will be accepted as transfer credit and their appropriate placement.
The transfer credit evaluation, also known as the Degree Works (DW) Audit, is completed by the Admissions Office in consultation with the chairpersons of our academic departments and is evaluated in accordance with our transfer credit policy.
The major steps in the transfer credit evaluation process are as follows:
The transfer credit evaluation process begins once a student has been officially accepted for admission to SUNY Plattsburgh.
Students who would like to know how their credits would transfer prior to applying are encouraged to call the admissions office and make an appointment to meet with a transfer advisor. While we will not be able to complete an official transfer credit evaluation at such an appointment, we will be happy to provide a preliminary estimate for advisement purposes.
Once a student has been accepted for admission, we begin the evaluation process by determining whether any additional information is needed to complete the evaluation.
Such information may include:
Typically, if additional information is needed to complete your evaluation, we will notify you via phone, e-mail, or postcard. We will not be able to complete your evaluation until this information is received.
If no information is needed, or if we have received all requested items, your application will be evaluated. Generally speaking, we evaluate transfer credits during the following periods:
Transfer credit evaluations are automatically prioritized for those students who have already paid their deposit. Once all deposit paid students have had their transfer credits completed, we will evaluate students who have been accepted, but not paid their deposit.
However, any student who has been accepted and would like to know his or her transfer credit status before paying the deposit can request that the evaluation be prioritized. Simply contact the admissions office at the number below to request a priority transfer credit evaluation.
Finally, certain coursework may require an in-depth consultation with the faculty from a specific department to determine its placement. This may slow down the evaluation process.
Once your evaluation has been completed, the admissions office will notify your by mail (your home address) and e-mail that your DW Audit is available for download in your MyPlattsburgh account.
Correspondence includes:
While we strive to ensure that all evaluations are completed with the highest degree of accuracy, it is important that you carefully review the DW Audit. Please do not hesitate to contact the admissions office if you have questions or concerns about your evaluation.
If you receive an evaluation with IP (In Progress) grades listed, it means that we need an official transcript to complete your application for enrollment. It is important that you send us a final, official transcript for each college with IP grades listed.
Once we have received all official transcripts, we will notify you that an updated DW Audit is available in your MyPlattsburgh account, which will complete your application for enrollment at SUNY Plattsburgh.
If you receive your evaluation and no IP grades are listed, your evaluation is complete.
The Admissions Office is located on the 10th floor of the Kehoe Building.
