- About Plattsburgh
Hey there! My name is Jessica Fish and I am a Senior Admissions Advisor at SUNY Plattsburgh. I coordinate our two fall open house programs as well as Scholars Weekend, our spring invitation-only, high-ability overnight visitation program. In addition, I interview prospective students, conduct presentations, review freshman applications and recruit primarily in the Capital District.
I also have the pleasure of managing the social media presence for the Admissions Office. We are always adding exciting new videos and pictures and helping prospective students connect with our campus community. Make sure to follow/like us on our Social Media Sites to stay updated - and feel free to ask any questions you may have through one of our sites!
Hometown: Plattsburgh, NY
Professional/Personal Biography: A native of Plattsburgh, I graduated high school locally from Beekmantown Central School in 2003. In 2007, I graduated from Ithaca College with a B.S. in Integrated Marketing Communications and minors in Speech Communication and Women's Studies. During that time, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study abroad in London. Without a doubt, it was a life-changing experience that I encourage every student to pursue (and thankfully, SUNY Plattsburgh has over 400 study abroad locations to choose from so you’ll find a place that is just right for you)!
Shortly after graduation, I began working in the SUNY Plattsburgh Admissions Office and also began pursuing an M.S in Leadership part-time. I am happy to say that I recently graduated this past May and can proudly call myself a SUNY Plattsburgh alumna!
When I am not working, I am enjoying life as a recent newlywed and home owner. The North Country has a lot of cultural, social, and recreational experiences to “soak up” so I spend much of my free time with family and friends doing just that!
Most Memorable College Experience: Choreographing and dancing in IC Unbound, my college’s dance company. I literally tried everything from hip hop to Irish clogging! I learned so many styles of expression, truly tested my creativity and met most of my best friends in the process.
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh Activity: Honestly, I like them all! SUNY Plattsburgh students are so passionate and so involved in student life. They are constantly coming up with new activities for the student body to take advantage of, like sponsored trips to Montreal and Boston and reduced skiing/snowboarding/movie passes. These offerings are always vetted through our student-run government, so they are 100 percent based on what the students want! Annual events like Relay for Life and the Night of Nations also serve to rally the entire campus and community together year after year. Therefore, whether the activity is an established staple of the SUNY Plattsburgh community or a brand new offering based on changing student interest, you will find that the energy behind each and every event will undoubtedly draw you in!
Best advice you received regarding college or would give someone entering college: Challenge yourself and challenge others! Don’t be afraid to speak up and give your opinion in class. Some of the biggest moments of personal and professional growth I have ever experienced came from having in-depth discussions with people who had differing points of view. I learned how to be a better listener; I learned how to be a better communicator; and I shaped the core of who I was and who I wanted to be. I changed many of my beliefs and the way I think about the world from those discussions, so don’t shy away from them. Be part of the conversation! You won’t regret it!
